이번에는 배터리 시간에 대해서 말해 보겠습니다. 광고에서는 13인치 AMD 제품은 최대 19시간 배터리 사용이 가능하다고 광고하고 있습니다. 그래서 직접 테스트를 해봤습니다. 예전 제가 만든 태블릿 배터리 테스트 영상을 보셨던 분은 아시겠지만, 밝기 100%에, 사운드 100%로 환경에서 유튜브 영상 무제한 재생시켜서 테스트를 진행했었는데요. 실제 이렇게 사용하는 분도 많지 않고, 최악의 조건으로 테스트하는 것보다는 실 사용 위주로 테스트를 진행하는 것이 좋을 것 같아서, 이번 테스트에는
놀랍게도 재생 해상도 설정을 1/2로 50% 화질로 셋팅하고 작업해보니, 별도로 프록시를 사용하지 않아도 영상 편집이 가능했습니다. 물론 제가 하는 편집이 화려한 이펙트가 들어가는 건 아니지만, 간단한 4K 영상을 원활하게 편집할 수 있어서 놀랐습니다. 기쁜 마음에 인코딩까지 진행해보니 30분이 걸린다고 표시가 되네요. 내장 그래픽 카드에 4K 영상의 인코딩까지 바라는건 욕심이었던 것 같네요. 결론은 4K 영상 편집용으로는 적합하지 않지만 FHD 영상 편집으로는 괜찮을 것 같습니다.
먼저 사이즈는 서피스 랩탑4는 13.5인치 3:2비율이고, Flex2 5G는 13.3인치에 16:9 비율이라, 세로 길이가 서피스 랩탑4 제품이 조금 더 깁니다. 그런데 이 부분이 정말 큰 장점입니다. 예전에 서피스북 1세대 모델을 사용하면서 느낀점이 13인치 모델인데 꼭 15인치 모델을 사용하는 것 같은 착각이 들었습니다. 작은 화면을 보는 느낌이 안들고 넓고 괘적한 화면을 13인치에서 느낄 수 있었는데요, 이번에 서피스 랩탑4에서도 동일한 느낌을 받을 수 있었습니다.

Thanks to the updated hardware, Microsoft was also able to fix one of the Surface Laptop 3’s biggest flaws: Battery life. That machine only reached seven hours and 50 minutes in our battery test, which was far less than the nearly 16 hours of uptime we saw on the 13-inch Surface Laptop 2. This model managed to clock an impressive 15 hours and 25 minutes, though that’s two hours less than Microsoft claims. In real-world performance, I was able to work on it for around 10 hours before the Laptop 4 needed a recharge. That combination of speed and battery life makes the Surface Laptop 4 a solid alternative to Apple’s M1 MacBooks (which are basically what I’m judging all ultraportables against these days).
That doesn’t mean it’s perfect, though. I’d love to see more than two ports on this thing, but at least Microsoft gives you both USB Type-A and USB-C. You can also charge over USB-C, just like the last few Surface devices. But the company is still relying on its proprietary Surface Connect for its official power adapter, as well as accessories like docks. And once again, there’s no support for Intel’s speedy Thunderbolt interface, which means you won’t see the full performance from some external hard drives. You won’t be able to plug in an external GPU at all, but I suppose that’s beyond the realm of a typical Surface Laptop buyer.
So, if you haven’t guessed, I was a bit disappointed that Microsoft decided to keep coasting with this same look. But after using the 15-inch Surface Laptop 4 for the past week, I’ve warmed up to it. It’s noticeably faster and has longer battery life than the previous model, and it still has one of the best keyboards on the market. You’ve also got the choice between Intel and AMD processors on both the 13-inch and 15-inch models. Take all of that together with a genuinely sturdy and premium-feeling case, and you’ve got an ultraportable that I could easily recommend to anyone.

The speakers are located under the keyboard, where they are pointed upward. I prefer this location t0 the bottom of the chassis, but the sound isn’t as clear as laptops that position them next to the keyboard instead, such as the Dell XPS 15 and MacBook Pro. The sound itself has a more full-bodied audio profile than many other laptops, with even a slight hint of bass. The addition of Dolby Atmos this time around adds some much-needed stereo separation, which helps give the Surface Laptop 4 a decent music-listening and show-watching experience.
And that definitely proved true in my testing. Those four extra cores mean huge improvements in multi-core performance. That was obvious in benchmarks like Geekbench and Cinebench. In anything that only relies on the CPU, like video encoding in Handbrake, the Surface Laptop 4 is pretty powerful thanks to that Ryzen processor. It also performed quite well in the photo editing test in PCMark 10, which makes them a half-decent option for photographers, and that’s not something I could have said about the previous model.
The Surface Laptop 4 does two important things to fix this problem. First, it makes Ryzen processors available in both the 13.5-inch and 15-inch sizes. The smaller size is limited to the six-core Ryzen 5, while the 15-inch model exclusively offers the eight-core Ryzen 7. Those extra cores add a lot of performance potential to the Surface Laptop 4, especially in the 15-inch model, which needs all the power Microsoft and AMD can squeeze into it.

I could see the frills hanging off of Vin Diesel’s tattered repair shop shirt, which conveniently showed his brawny biceps in the trailer for F9 (the next Fast and Furious movie). There is only one USB Type-C port (without Thunderbolt support), the proprietary Surface Connect input is, well, proprietary, and the display bezels are long overdue for a buzzcut. These, you would think, are the easy things to fix. And yet, I close this largely positive review with the feeling that Microsoft was only a shake and a twist away from making the Surface Laptop 4

As for the battery decision, I opt to test on battery power for two reasons. First, as a test of battery life under load — benchmarks are meant to simulate heavy workloads consistently to give users an idea of what performance they can expect from a device. Plus, the consistency helps in comparing different hardware configurations. The other reason is because manufacturers often implement some sort of performance limit while using battery power to help increase battery life. Since it’s a laptop, and generally used while unplugged, it’s important to take the performance impact of any battery-saving performance tweaks into consideration. In most laptops I test, the performance difference is small, if it exists at all. However, the Surface Laptop 4 saw huge benefits when plugged in.
First up, let’s address the elephant in the room: the Surface Laptop’s Ryzen 7 CPU. Like with the Laptop 3, Microsoft and AMD partnered to put together a custom Ryzen CPU for the Surface Laptop 4 called the Ryzen 7 4980U Surface Edition (SE). On the upside, this means that the processor boasts some optimizations that improve performance and battery life. On the other hand, it makes it frustrating to compare since the chip is only available in the Surface Laptop 4. That said, it does look like the 4980U SE could be a suped-up Ryzen 7 4800U, but there’s likely more going on here than just slightly higher clock speeds.
However, it seemed those low scores largely came from restrictive power and performance settings on the Laptop 4. Clicking the battery icon on the bottom-right side of the taskbar and increasing the slider from the default ‘Recommended’ to ‘Best performance’ saw single-core performance jump from 549 to 929 and multi-core leap from 4124 to 5879 (higher scores are better). Further, plugging in the Laptop 4 and setting the plugged-in performance tuning to ‘Best’ also saw significant leaps over the same setting on battery, with single- and multi-core scores going to 1152 and 6950 accordingly.

For the Intel-equipped Surface Laptop 4 models, you can expect a 70 percent performance bump, plus up to 19 hours of battery life. In some instances, you may even see speeds that are twice as fast as the Laptop 3, a testament to how far Intel has come with its latest mobile processors. Beyond those upgrades, though, everything else is the same: a 201-ppi PixelSense touchscreen display, a 720p Windows Hello webcam, and USB-C and USB Type-A ports. There’s still no Thunderbolt connectivity, something that would allow it to connect to fast external hard drives and external GPUs. (I’d wager it would be too complicated to include now that both Laptop models are offered with AMD chips, which don’t natively support Thunderbolt.)
The Surface Laptop 4 will ship in the US, Canada and Japan on April 15th, starting at $999. That’ll get you a 13.5-inch model with a Ryzen 5 CPU with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. At the hig end, you can snag Core i7 models with 32GB of RAM and a terabyte of storage for $2,299 (13.5-inch) or $2,399 (15-inch). 마이크로소프트의 서피스 시리즈는 기본적으로 마이크로소프트 오피스 프로그램을 포함해서 가격이 책정되어 있습니다. 즉 처음에 구매를 하면 마이크로소프트의 워드, 엑셀, 파워포인트 등을 바로 사용할 수 있는 전용 키가 같이 동봉되어 있습니다. 다방면으로 사용이 가능한 팔방미인의 특징을 가진 노트북이지만 기본적으로 비즈니스 노트북이 주된 용도이기 때문에 처음에 구매하자마자 바로 마이크로소프트의 정식 오피스 프로그램을 사용할 수 있다는 부분도 서피스 노트북이 가진 큰 장점입니다.

전체적으로 군더더기없이 깔끔하기 때문에 어느 장소에서든 잘 스며들면서 어울리는 디자인을 가지고 있습니다. 참고로 제가 구입한 서피스 랩탑 4 15인치 모델은 라이젠 CPU가 탑재되어 있는 실버 색상의 모델입니다. 인텔 CPU가 탑재되어 있는 모델은 실버 외에도 블랙 색상도 선택할 수 있는데요. 블랙도 굉장히 심플하면서 고급스러운 느낌이라서 첫인상으로 느껴지는 서피스의 디자인은 정말 훌륭하다고 할 수 있습니다.

The weak point here is the keyboard. It feels strangely spread out. The keys are spongy and seem to lack the fast rebound of competitors like the Dell XPS 15. I’m also miffed at the lack of a right control key. I hardly ever see this complaint mentioned anywhere, so I’m possibly the only person using this key. (It’s possible to map the little menu key to control using third-party software, so this isn’t a deal breaker.) The trackpad, as with previous Surface Laptops, is the best non-Apple trackpad I’ve ever used.
Where the Surface wins most of the time is design, build quality, and the screen. I love the 3:2 ratio. It gives you more vertical screen real estate, which means less scrolling so you can focus on what you’re reading. The native resolution of 2,496 x 1,664 pixels isn’t 4K-sharp like the Dell XPS 15, but it’s considerably better than the “Full HD” 1080p screens found in many 15-inch laptops. In terms of pixel density, it’s very close to “Quad HD” (2,560 x 1,440 pixels but on a 16:9 display).
It’s plenty sharp, with nice crisp text and excellent colors. The Ryzen-powered 15-inch version also uses AMD’s FreeSync technology, which allows for on-the-fly screen refresh rate adjustments, resulting in very smooth animations and almost no jerky movements. This is a feature you often find on gaming machines, but it’s rare on consumer-oriented devices. It might sound like a small thing, but after using the Surface Laptop 4 for a week, it was painful to go back to displays without it.

So this review will largely focus on the new system’s performance. But my priority wasn’t to compare the 15-inch Surface Laptop 4 that we received to its predecessor. For one, the Laptop 3 set a low performance bar — it had mediocre battery life, and couldn’t even play a 4K 60FPS video without stuttering, so even a competent budget laptop would blow that out of the water. But more importantly, there’s another company out there that recently made a huge chip upgrade to its flagship models, which has left most other 2020 chip upgrades in the dust: Apple, with its Arm-based M1. So my big question when looking at AMD’s new Ryzen 7 Surface Edition (also known as the AMD Ryzen 7 4980U Microsoft Surface Edition because of course it is) is: Does it beat Apple’s M1?
The Laptop 4 also knocks cooling out of the park. The Laptop 4’s fans did a really excellent job cooling the system. Throughout my fairly standard load of office multitasking (including around a dozen Chrome tabs, Spotify streaming, and the like), the chassis remained downright cold. During the more intense tests I ran, the CPU remained steadily in the mid-70s (Celsius) with occasional spikes up to the mid-80s — jumps up to 90 were rare. I was able to run our 4K video export several times in a row without any negative impact on results, and I didn’t see a huge dip in Cinebench results over a 30-minute loop either.
The port selection is also the same, which is good news and bad news. The Laptop 4 retains a USB-A port, which I stubbornly believe is still a necessity for modern laptops (looking at you, Apple and Dell). But there is just one, and neither the Intel or AMD model supports Thunderbolt on their lone USB-C ports, which is disappointing on a laptop at this price. The Surface Laptop could certainly do with more port options, even if it’s competitive with what Apple and Dell are offering in terms of numbers. (In addition to the USB-A and USB-C, you get a headphone jack and Microsoft’s proprietary charging port.)

Brightness is an issue. The Surface Laptop 4’s maximum brightness on battery power is roughly 40 percent less than when connected to a wall socket. Many laptops reduce brightness on battery power, but this is more aggressive than usual. To make matters worse, the mirror-like screen does nothing to reduce reflections. Outdoors use is unpleasant and even a bright, sunlit window creates enough glare to be a distraction.
I love the fabric interior, which remains a unique design decision but is now optional. The fabric looks and feels more inviting than the metal used by competitors. If you’re worried about how it will hold up: don’t be. Speaking from experience, I can assure you the fabric holds up well. Yes, it will eventually show signs of wear, but it’s no worse than a typical plastic or metal laptop interior.
The Surface Laptop 4 has punchy speakers with excellent volume. There’s great separation between lows, mids, and highs, which avoids the muddy sound that is common to many laptops as speaker volume nears maximum. There’s no subwoofer, so bass can sound flat, but the Laptop 4 provides some sense of depth without overwhelming the rest of the track you’re enjoying.
