We also subjected our review unit to several GFXBench battery tests to determine how it manages its performance under sustained load. We ran the T-Rex and Manhattan benchmarks 30 times on a loop and recorded any changes in frame rates or battery life for each benchmark run-through. Modern smartphones often breeze through T-Rex but struggle in Manhattan, which is the case with the S10 5G. Our review unit maintained consistent frame rates during the former but throttled heavily in the latter after around the 18th loop. The display gets impressively dim too, with X-Rite i1Pro 2 recording a minimum luminosity of just 1.62 cd/m². Samsung includes a blue-light filter and an integrated night mode, which should make eBooks or websites easy to read at night. Unfortunately, the panel uses pulse-width modulation (PWM) to regulate screen brightness, with our panel flickering between 60 and 240.4 Hz. These frequencies are low enough to cause health issues like eye strain and headaches for those who are PWM sensitive, so it would be good if Samsung included DC dimming like OnePlus and Xiaomi, as this near eliminates any display flickering.

The Galaxy S10 5G will be one of the first 5G phones on all major carriers, but it’s also going to be among the most expensive in Samsung’s new Galaxy lineup. We break down what it’s like, and whether you should wait or buy into the next-gen network.

As we’ve said with the Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus, the screen on the S10 5G is positively gorgeous. It’s Samsung’s new Infinity-O screen — which means there’s a hole-punch camera that floats around the display in the top of the screen like a hole punch in a piece of paper. The dual cameras on the front don’t look as good as the one on the Galaxy S10 Plus — they are spaced out more so they take up more room. That’s because it’s not the same camera system as the S10 Plus, which we’ll get to later in this review.
Those with small hands will have difficulty using this phone one-handed, but don’t expect anything too different from the Galaxy Note 9. The Note 9 also has a 6.4-inch screen, and Samsung said it managed to fit all the tech it needed into the S10 5G in a similar body, while expanding the screen size by shaving down bezels. The 5G phone is a little heavier at 198 grams (the S10 Plus is 175 grams and the iPhone XS Max is 208 grams), but it makes the phone feel more substantial.
The camera system on the Galaxy S10 5G is similar to the Galaxy S10 Plus, but there are some upgrades. Yes, you get the same triple-camera system that has an ultrawide-angle lens, a standard lens, and a telephoto lens, allowing you to swap between them. But the Galaxy S10 5G comes with a Time of Flight (ToF) sensor on the back to help measure depth. Samsung said this will enhance AR applications as 5G becomes a reality.

The Galaxy S10 5G’s WQHD+ Dynamic AMOLED screen is slightly bigger than the rest, measuring 6.7in across the diagonal, and it also uses a larger 4,500mAh capacity battery – presumably to help mitigate the negative effects of the power-draining 5G modem (more on that later). The S10 5G also includes an added 3D depth-sensing camera, which is mostly for the benefit of augmented reality applications.
With patchy coverage, pricey hardware and not-so-impressive speeds, 5G is currently reserved for the earliest of early adopters. If you’re lucky enough to have piles of cash burning a hole in your pocket, and are willing to wait a little while until coverage (hopefully) improves, then there’s currently a fair few 5G-enabled smartphones to pick and choose from, with more on the way shortly.
The S10 5G’s only real downside is overall stamina. Despite the larger battery, the S10 5G didn’t do quite so well as the S10 Plus in our in-house battery rundown test, managing 20hrs and 40mins on a single charge. All things considered, that’s still a very good result, it’s just that the added Exynos 5100 modem clearly has a negative effect on overall battery life even when not in use.

The phone’s design is punctuated by a sizeable 6.7-inch display, while it also happens to be thicker and heavier than its daintier brothers too. After finally finding one on the show floor during MWC I can say that this extra heft is noticeable, with the larger proportions also making the handset harder to hold. All that said it’s not awful and it certainly looks bulkier in pictures than it feels in actuality.
It’s all because right now, any forthcoming 5G phones have to rely on a standalone modem being adhered to their respective PCB, meaning more space is required to fit them in and more power is required to keep things ticking over. No doubt, chip makers like Qualcomm are well on their way to offering up chipsets with integrated 5G modems but right now, you’ll have to settle for hulking handsets like the S10 5G.
Beyond scale, everything seems far more in line with the rest of the S10 family; there’s a shiny metal frame running the phone’s edge, glass on the front and back, and yes, even a headphone jack set into its bottom edge. Essentially, beyond its size, it looks like an S10 and boasts all the other staple S10 features you’d expect like IP68 dust and water resistance, and wireless charging.
