For everyone else, it’s going to be a lot of fun. You can get a Redeye for $71,945, but we’d highly recommend spending $6,000 to upgrade to the Widebody package. Not only do the wide fenders look better, but they allow Dodge to squeeze in larger tires that give you more grip. Based on our experience testing the Widebody, we couldn’t imagine the same amount of power with less grip.
Mustang Bullitt, the quickest ‘Stang you can buy without a Shelby badge, offered 475 horsepower. In fact, the Redeye makes more power than any other production vehicle costing less than $1 million. If you want to top it, you’ll need something with a name like “Bugatti” or “Koenigsegg.” That’s amazing for a car that, even with as many options as our tester, costs $90,040.
We should also report that it’s nearly impossible to have fun in this car without eliciting serious dirty looks. With its battleship size and constantly screeching, bellowing and whining symphony of speed, you can’t ever avoid attention if you want to move quickly. Even when parked, its flared fenders and angry nostrils project aggression and insanity like nothing else.

But as with all high-performance Challengers, what lurks under the hood is the real star of the show. Here it’s a modified version of the Hellcat Redeye’s supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V8. The engine normally makes 797 horsepower and 707 pound-feet of torque, but the Super Stock gets a unique software calibration that raises the redline from 6,300 rpm to 6,400 rpm and bumps the peak output to a healthy 807 horsepower. Also along for the ride is the SRT Power Chiller that debuted on the Demon, a system that diverts refrigerant from the air conditioning system to cool air-intake temperatures for better on-track performance. All of that grunt is routed to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission that offers different shift scheduling and overall behavior based on the drive mode selected.
Our loaded tester vehicle ($97,711 with destination fee) was outfitted with several optional packages that bring suede-like Alcantara and real carbon fiber into the interior, but the cabin is otherwise mostly standard Challenger fare. The good news is that the Super Stock is just as comfortable for long stints behind the wheel as any SRT Challenger we’ve come across since 2015, and there’s still acres of head and leg room, even for taller passengers. And if this particular example were optioned with a back seat, it would probably be just as usable as the back seats in other Challenger models that we’ve tested, too. (Like the Demon, the rear seat of the Super Stock can be deleted for one dollar to shave off some weight for better performance. If so optioned, a cargo net is installed in its place.)
The Super Stock also comes packing plenty of go-fast tech to help put all of that power to good use. Although it eschews the Demon’s finicky Trans Brake feature (which allows the engine to build torque while remaining stationary for more forceful launches by locking the output shaft), it does come with a variety of other tricks that are aimed squarely at getting the car to efficiently put the muscle to the pavement. Along with a standard launch control system that holds the engine revs at a specified level until you side-step the brake pedal, the Super Stock also has Launch Assist, a system that’s designed to detect and eliminate oscillations in the rear suspension as the car is accelerating.

After driving the Hellcat Redeye Widebody on the track and smooth paved roads of New England, I was eager to get some seat time on our horrible, no good, very bad roads here in Michigan. I was surprised at how comfortable the car was at the launch event, and wanted to see if it held up on our semi-paved moonscape. Turns out, it does. The roads were freshly drenched with rain, so I left the car in its lazier settings, as this thing will turn around and snap at you if you’re too eager on the throttle, especially in the wet. Just as the cracks and craters soaked up the water, the suspension soaks up the cracks and craters. It’s a comfortable, if overpowered, daily driver.
Yes, 797 horsepower is so much you’ll probably never actually be able to use it all on the street. But there’s more to the monster under the hood than the raw numbers. First, there’s the sound. I already feel that the Hemis are the best-sounding American V8s right now. They have such a round, mellow rumble, and it’s particularly loud and hearty in the Red Eye. Then you add the urgent whine of the supercharger under the hood, and it becomes a harmony of raw power. And the sound isn’t reserved to redline or full throttle. Even bouncing between stoplights you’ll get a nice taste of it all. More revs and throttle just raise the volume.
. I used to say the coupe’s low roof and bulky A-pillars were a problem. Then I got over that. You’re driving nearly 800 hp, so sit up and be on your toes. The trunk is huge, too. I could have put a car seat in the back, had I needed to. You can live with the Challenger. And the Redeye is perhaps the best version yet. The starting price is about $60 grand. That’s a steal. The price of our tester is $92,290. That’s insane. The $6,000 widebody pack is the thing I’d recommend most out of all the options. Get the nice leather, too.

That’s not to say Dodge won’t try to keep dealers from jacking up Demon prices. Kuniskis: “Now, we have some things in place that probably make that a little more difficult. Every car is serialized. Every car has the customer’s name on the [optional Demon] Box and on the air vent. Pure speculators that are willing to pay significantly over MSRP, they’re of course going to want their name on their box and on their dash. So if a dealer were to order that vehicle in advance with a generic name, we’re not going to allow them to change the plate on the box or on the air vent at a later date. Whatever they put on there, they put on there. So if they order a generic [plate] as an ‘XYZ Name’ on the dash, and a customer comes in and says ‘I’m willing to pay X number of thousands of dollars over,” and says, ‘Give me a replacement plate,’ [it’s] not available.”
And what about the possibility of dealership price gouging? Kuniskis says, “That comes up a lot, and what I tell people all the time is that our dealers are our partners… they are phenomenal business partners with us. I have no control over the franchise agreements, and that’s why there’s a Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price [MSRP]. We spend a lot of time — and for a good reason — talking about this tenth of a percent of the cars that get marked up over sticker, and we never talk about the 99-point-9 percent that they sell under sticker, and nobody seems to complain about that. So, it’s going to be what the market demand is.”
Just 3,300 units are planned for the Demon’s one-year production run, with 3,000 units coming to the US and 300 earmarked for Canada. As such, there’s likely to be a long line of reservations for a relatively small amount of vehicles at Dodge/SRT dealers. That said, unlike many other specialty or high-end models that are only available through participating certified dealerships, the automaker has no plans to limit where the car is available. “It’s a Dodge vehicle, it’s eligible for sale at a Dodge dealership. There won’t be any sort of special program or anything like that,” said Kuniskis.

These high-performance Challengers might lack an incredible track attack, but they’re quick as hell in a straight line and handle well enough to hustle down twisty back roads—provided your heavy right foot knows when to let up. Although the Widebody package adds wider wheels and tires for more grip, it didn’t convince us that it’s ready to corner with the Shelby GT350 or the Camaro ZL1. The widebody Dodge is composed at the limit, but its electrically assisted power steering (the regular Hellcat has a hydraulic system) is still slow to react and doesn’t provide the ethereal feedback of its track-focused rivals. Instead, switching between the three steering settings feels more like choosing among varying numbness levels. Still, the Hellcats make amazing speed between corners, so their powerful Brembo brakes will get a big workout.
While we love manual transmissions, the Hellcat’s standard six-speed manual is disappointing in this application. Instead, we’d take home the regular Hellcat with the optional eight-speed automatic that shifts quicker and optimizes acceleration. Of the many available options, we’d snag the high-performance summer tires and Driver Convenience Group (blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, high-intensity-discharge headlights, and power-folding exterior mirrors). The Widebody package certainly looks sweet and has useful handling upgrades, but its mild performance improvement isn’t worth the $6000 price tag. Besides, heavy-footed buyers will need to save that money for replacing tires if they roast the rubber too often.
. While the SRT 392 version has been discontinued, much of its equipment such as adaptive dampers and SRT drive modes is now available on the Challenger R/T Scat Pack. Both Hellcat models have a new twin-snorkel hood, an optional satin-black spoiler, more interior trim options, and redesigned 20-inch Brass Monkey wheels. Likewise, all Hellcats have an improved launch control for improved acceleration, a new system called “Launch Assist” that optimizes traction at take-off, and a new line-lock feature that allows smoky burnouts to heat up and clean the rear tires for maximum acceleration runs.
