Just like the global version the Poco M3, the India edition is also driven by Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 platform. The 600-series octa-core chipset debuted earlier this year as a successor to Snapdragon 665. In India, Poco is pairing the Snapdragon 662 with 6GB RAM and 64GB UFS 2.1 or 128GB UFS 2.2 storage. It packs a 6000-mAh battery which seems to fast becoming an industry norm in under 15K segment. The massive battery also supports 18W fast charging while the bundled charger is capable of delivering 22.5W fast charging.

The facia of the phone is dominated by a large screen with a dew-drop notch and a sizeable chin. At the top of the phone, there’s the earpiece, a 3.5mm audio jack, an IR blaster, and a microphone. The phone has the volume keys and the power button on the right side edge and the latter also doubles up as a fingerprint scanner. A triple-card tray finds a real-estate on the left edge. Finally, at the bottom edge, there’s another speaker completing the stereo setup, a mic, and USB-C port for charging and data transfer.

The dynamics of the affordable phone market have changed a lot since last year as the increased taxes and duties have made it really hard for OEMs to accommodate as much value. Poco being an emerging brand can manage at razer thin margins and views this as an opportunity, focusing its efforts in the under 15K segment. So, does the Poco M3 manages to impress? However, the differentiation here is in the uniqueness, and there’s very little on the market that stands out with both eye-catching design and great build quality in the way the Poco M3 does. Add to that an ad-free experience, limited bloat, and generally reliable performance, and you’ve got a phone that truly excels at its price point. The only really major downside is the camera experience, but if you’re not interested in mobile photography, the Poco M3 ticks all of the other boxes for a mega cheap phone.

I’m mixed on the Poco M3 cameras. The 48MP primary shooter is certainly capable of capturing some solid images with good lighting, but I found the HDR implementation to be a bit spotty. Additionally, there’s just too much grain in shadow regions, highlighting a need for some camera software optimization. Focusing too can be a bit hit or miss with more than one occasion where I was left tapping on the display trying to lock it in.

The Poco M3 is a big step forward for the Poco brand. The build quality and design easily bests its competition, and the phone impresses overall with battery life, general performance. The cameras could be a bit better, but that’s a problem that plagues most phones in its price range. Overall, the Poco is easily one of the best entry-level phones you can buy.

The phone’s design certainly stands out from behind, with a large glossy camera bump emblazoned with a bright white “POCO” logo. The main camera is 48 megapixels, but the other two cameras are just 2-megapixel sensors for depth and macro, so this isn’t really a meaningful triple-camera setup. While the phone’s chassis is constructed out of plastic, it uses a leather-ish finish that feels much nicer to the touch than most other plastic phones. It’s available in black, yellow, and blue.

The M3’s processor is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 662, which is paired with 4GB of RAM. It runs MIUI 12 atop Android 10. The battery is an impressive 6,000mAh, and the phone is a hefty but fairly manageable 9.6mm thick and 198g in weight. There are options for 64GB or 128GB of storage, and the phone has two SIM card slots in addition to a separate microSD slot. There’s also a headphone jack as well as a USB-C port.

The Poco M3 has a 6.53-inch 1080p LCD screen with a waterdrop notch for the 8-megapixel selfie camera. The display is pretty basic: the chin at the bottom is quite big, the fingerprint sensor is integrated into the power button on the side rather than the screen, and the panel is only 60Hz, but it’s sharp enough and perfectly serviceable.

The performance is quite consistent all through and you really won’t to wait around for apps to load, even if a few are already open in the background. This is an affordable Android phone and more than does its bit to ensure there are no performance bottlenecks. For the most popular daily apps that you may be using, including social media apps, the load times are more than acceptable. Mind you, things will vary very slightly between the 64GB and 128GB storage options—the former is the UFS 2.1 standard while the latter is the somewhat faster UFS 2.2 standard, and that means better data read and write speeds which straightaway means a more responsive system in place. Our observations are based on the 64GB variant, and we believe the 128GB performance will be a notch better for sure, such is the nature of the hardware in play.

In terms of software, the Poco M3 runs on Android 10-based MIUI 12 with a Poco launcher. The experience of using this customOS is quite similar to MIUI on Xiaomi devices, however, there is one dissimilarity that we approve of and that is no ads. You still get a ton of bloatware in the form of preinstalled apps including LinkedIn, Facebook — most of which can be uninstalled.

However, that gusto didn’t last for too long and the brand steered its course in a different direction. The Pocoseries turned into a sub-brand and then an independent brand. It slowly drifted from being the self-anointed flagship killer to offering handsets in the budget category and now it has a diverse portfolio offering handsets across price categories.

When it comes to photo quality, the daylight shots were quite okay with sufficient detail. The quality of the image is directly proportional to the availability of the light. However, in some cases, the colours may seem too bright. Both the depth mode and macro mode turn out to be acceptable for the price the device is selling at.

The Poco M3 does not have an ultra-wide camera and I was hoping to see one on the more expensive Poco M3 Pro 5G. Sadly, this isn’t the case. In fact, the camera setup is very similar to that of the M3. You get an 8-megapixel camera in the front, and a 48-megapixel primary camera as well as two2-megapixel cameras at the back for macros and depth. The camera app offers the standard shooting modes such as Night, Pro, etc, and can record videos at up to 1080p.

Gaming performance was good too. Heavy titles such as Call of Duty: Mobile ran well, though the graphics quality was limited to Medium and the advanced options were disabled. The back of the Poco M3 Pro 5G did get warm after about 20 minutes of gaming but this was not too alarming. Video playback was good too, but the low brightness and reflective nature of the display meant that the viewing experience outdoors or under bright lights wasn’t great.

I used the Poco phone for nearly a week and the device lasted for close to 1.5 days on a single charge. During my review period, I used the phone as my primary device, which means I took several calls all through the day, listened to music, watched videos on YouTube and movies on Netflix, played games and so on. The phone was able to handle all these tasks very easily all through the day. There’s fast charging support as well. The Poco M3 comes packed with 18W fast charging support out-of-the-box, which in my opinion is one of the selling aspects of the device. It took around one hour to charge fully from 0 to 100 percent, which is great for a phone in this price segment.

Another very important area where the Poco M3 lacks is the camera. The pictures shot with the Poco phone appear to be just decent in all lighting conditions. The photos captured with the main sensor turn out to be fine with details missing out most of the time. The colours also look dull in most scenarios. The low-light situation is where the phone lags drastically. Pictures shot under low light miss out on major details. Portrait mode offers decent performance in comparison. The depth sensor manages to click pictures with the background properly blurred out and look appealing to the eyes. The phone struggles to click decent macro shots.

Well, the Poco M3 looks promising for the price with some drawbacks here and there. One of the biggest problems of this budget phone is the substandard cameras. Although I don’t wish a phone at this price point to capture pictures as good as the Pixel or iPhone but given the competition, I feel the camera performance of the phone could have been slightly better. Another area where the Poco phone lacks is in the screen. The display of the phone is big, which is great, but pretty dull in all lighting conditions, which isn’t a good thing for gamers and movie lovers out there.
