As an action camera, it ticks all of the boxes – even just for catching all angles of the action. Simple features like wind reduction and auto-stabilisation make sure your basic exported edit is incredibly high quality, and it’s a fantastic foundation to build more unique character in with your own touch is amazing.

You’ll get a video file in the form of a ‘.insv’ file, which you open in-app with your desktop or phone to edit and play around with. Note here that you’ll get 3 files per recording, one from each camera and a compiled ‘LRV’ file. Premiere Pro users can install a plug-in to edit files there, also, which is handy.

It’s genuinely really simple to use. Set it up where you want it, the small circular screen will display your surroundings, and you can adjust image quality and settings via the touchscreen – or, as I do, press the button and it starts to record with an audible beep & red light to let you know it’s rolling.

But the creative options it opens up for homemade videos is huge – as you’re as prepared to learn its editing lingo, have a relatively recent smartphone and are happy with 1080p flat videos, it’s potentially one of the most fun lockdown companions you can buy. This also reflects a broader issue that’s worth noting – you’ll need a fairly recent phone or tablet to make the most of the Insta360 One X2’s app. For iPhones, you need a model with the A11 chip or above (effectively anything from the iPhone 8/8 Plus onwards), while on Android you’ll ideally need a phone that has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, Exynos 9810 or Kirin 980 chip or above (think Samsung Galaxy S9 or Huawei Mate 20 and up).

So when it came time to take the ONE X2 out for a real-world test—some snowshoe running on a sunny day at the Cornell golf course—I attached it to the Invisible Selfie Stick, pressed the shutter button to start recording, and started running. Every so often, I’d stop and start again at logical points to reduce the need to extract footage from a long recording. But that was it—apart from having to hold the selfie stick out in front of me while running, which is a little awkward, I didn’t pay attention to anything else. The Invisible Selfie Stick is well named; the ONE X2 automatically edits it out of all footage, so all you’re left with is an occasionally odd arm position or the selfie stick’s shadow. Plus, the 360º filming means that where you hold the selfie stick isn’t all that important—the ONE X2 will always capture you.

In fact, the Insta360 app bundles together all sorts of different features. Encapsulated in it is an entire social networking community surrounding the videos, so you can watch other people’s videos and post your own. You can follow people, like their posts, and participate in post-specific comment streams. There’s even a notification center that displays all the likes, comments, and follows you get, plus a full chat capability that the company also uses to alert you to new tutorials. But wait, there’s more! (A bit dizzying, I know.) The app rewards positive actions with Insta360 Gold—basically in-app currency worth 1¢ each—that you can redeem for discounts on ONE X2 accessories or for Apple or Google gift cards. Most amusing is that bad behavior in the comments is penalized by taking Gold back.

It took me some time to figure out how to trim bad bits off the start and end of the clip and then quite a bit longer to figure out that I had to add keyframes whenever I wanted to change the field of view. But once I did, what flexibility! At any moment during the video, while it was playing on my iPhone, I could swipe on the screen to have the camera look at me, ahead of me, up at the sky, or down at the ground. If I were more self-absorbed, I could have had the app track me automatically at all times. The footage was also quite smooth, considering how much I was moving the camera around while running. It wasn’t even easy to tell when I switched the selfie stick from one hand to the other while filming. This is computational photography at its best.

For those who want to be able to access the raw 360 footage from the camera and process it without using Insta360 studio, this can be easily done by simply changing the file name extension from “insv” to “mp4”. This needs to be done to both the videos comprising the 360 footage so one ends up with two 2880×2880 video files (when using the camera’s 5.7k setting) that can be edited with most video NLE’s (non-linear editor).

Below this port are two latches that release the battery. In what I find to be a bit of a strange design, the cover and latches are part of the battery itself. In a way, I like how it removes the chance of losing the cover—but it also means that the cost of the battery has to include the cover piece, as well as the o-ring seals, to keep the space waterproof. It works well enough but seems like an odd design choice.

I was sure the camera was toast and as far as the lenses were concerned, they were pretty heavily damaged. The camera itself, however, still worked and kept recording after the fall. The usb port cover and battery were still firmly in place, and once I got it home (after circling back to pick it up) it still functioned. While obviously not what you want to do to this camera, I’m impressed with how tough it was.

One thing that frustrates me about using cameras, either stand-alone or on phones, is having to make decisions on what content you are going to capture. It’s a relief to use a camera like the One X2 since you can capture everything in 360 videos and then later use the powerful Insta360 smartphone software to export the bits and pieces that you want to share or use to create other content with. When I took the One X2 to the US Grand Prix in Austin, I captured lots of 360 video content in various corners of the course and then exported what I wanted to share with ease. I love that the One X2 provides the ability to just go ahead and capture content and worry about what parts of that you want to keep later.

In album view you can see what has been captured on your camera and then select content to download to your phone for further editing and use. There are a host of viewing and editing tools available in the app. You can change the aspect ratio of the content, view tiny planet shots, apply the PureShot auto enhancement, take a snapshot of the content, enable Multiview, add music, change video speed, and much more. Multiview is a cool option that shows you different views of the content in another window that you customize so you can see things like people’s reactions as something is happening in the video.

You can charge up the Insta360 One X2, insert a microSD card (up to 1TB), and start recording without any smartphone connection. The round LCD touchscreen supports taps and swipes so when it first turns on it shows the current views of the cameras. Tap once to pop up various status indicators. With these indicators shown swipe from the top and work down to get to several controls. Swipe left and right to view all of the controls. These include display brightness, lock mode, LED toggle, AirPods connectivity, mic modes, voice control, and more settings.

At $449.99, the X3 is slightly more expensive than its predecessor and still has the same 5.7K max resolution as the X2 did. However, the company says the camera’s 1/2-inch sensors have gotten an upgrade for “big resolution and image quality improvements.” The actual lenses have also gotten a few tweaks — they’re now f1.9 compared to f2.0 and will capture a wider scene with a focal length of 6.7mm, whereas the X2’s lenses were 7.2mm.
