The other major hardware difference between Google’s new phones are their battery sizes. The Pixel 2 has a non-removable 2,700 mAh battery, and it’s not surprising that the bigger Pixel 2 XL also has a larger 3,520 mAh battery. The first issue is the biggest: awful viewing angles. Even the slightest deviation produces a noticeable blue tint, such that you need to be viewing the display dead-on to receive an ideal experience. I’m not 100% sure whether this is an issue with the panel itself, or some other aspect to the display composition like a filter or other layer, but it’s a hardware problem, and it’s immediately obvious. Samsung solved this problem a long time ago, so LG needs to work hard to resolve this with their technology in the very next generation.
LG’s OLED technology is grainer than Samsung’s, too, which is a unique problem I haven’t seen with many LCDs either. The grain presents itself as a slight speckling, almost dust-like, across the entirety of the display. It’s most noticeable at a lower brightness and while viewing uniform white colors, like viewing the background of the Gmail or Twitter apps. Not as much of an issue in my opinion as the viewing angles or uniformity, but with the grain, the display doesn’t feel as crisp or clear as most other flagship phone displays.
In some aspects, the display is pretty similar to other OLEDs. Due to its high pixel density (538 ppi) it uses a diamond subpixel arrangement, which has lower ‘true’ detail than the RGB stripe used in LCDs. This isn’t a big deal at this sort of pixel density. Brightness is fairly typical as well, at 437 nits (100% APL). Samsung’s flagship phones push higher than this with their sunlight modes, but most other OLED smartphones do not and tend to fall around the acceptable 400 nit mark. The Pixel 2 XL is not hard to view outdoors.

Interestingly Droid Life says Google will offer financing for those determined to have one of its new models at any cost. Spread over 24 months the Pixel 2 will cost $27.04 per month (64GB) or $31.21pm (128GB) while the Pixel 2 XL will be $35.38pm (64GB) or $39.54pm (128GB). This would represent interest free payments, which should be highly appealing to many.
One final detail Droid Life uncovered: the new Pixels will have slightly different colour options at launch. The Pixel 2 will come in Kinda Blue, Just Black and Clearly White (no more Really Blue) while the Pixel 2 XL will have Just Black and Black & White which also has a funky orange power button for love it/hate it appeal.

The Pixel 2 XL is the larger of the newly announced Pixel phones. It sports a 6-inch (2880 x 1440 pixels) Quad HD+ pOLED display with 100% DCI-P3 coverage, 100000:1 super contrast ratio, 3D Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. Display P3 can render more colors than sRGB because it has a wider gamut. Without color management, the Android OS passes the decoded sRGB image through to the display, unaware that the display has a wider gamut than the content. As a result, the display reinterprets the color values in this wider gamut and effectively “stretches” the colors. This makes the reds more red, the greens more green, etc. To the user, the screen looks more saturated and colors “pop” more. But the stretching is imprecise; it’s not what the image designer intended. There’s no way for the designer to calculate the stretching effect, hence the rendered colors are not accurate. Most Android mobile phones with OLED displays look saturated for this reason.
Raymond Soneira provided some information on background that was helpful. And provided this comment: “Very few reviewers understand current display technology, which gives rise to lots of bogus claims. You can’t simply eyeball mobile and TV display performance anymore, the displays are now considerably more complex with lots of internal modes and variables that need to be properly lab tested, measured, and evaluated.”
Yes, in some photos the colors are less “vibrant” compared to the 1st gen XL but that doesn’t necessarily (always) mean less accurate. When doing some comparison with my 1st-gen Pixel XL and iPhone 7 Plus, the results are, for the most part, excellent. Accurate color reproduction is good. (I’ll also add that my first take is that the Pixel 2 XL’s camera is one of the best — and better than the 1st gen XL.)

The new Pixels are the first Google devices to feature always-on displays, which is a nice touch that is further enhanced by the addition of always-on music recognition. Instead of having to pull up a dedicated app like Shazam to identify music playing around you, you’ll be able to see the track title and artist right on the screen, without even having to wake up the phone. This is definitely a cool feature, and privacy-minded users should know that the phone does not, in fact, send out everything it records back to Google’s servers. Instead, ambient sound is compared to an on-device database containing tens of thousands of signatures of popular tracks.
Let’s talk a bit about the cameras. Obviously, we’ll leave the complete assessment for the full review, but we can talk a bit about the computational photography features that Google’s baked into both new Pixels. The rear camera is a single-lens model, which may feel a bit behind the curve. Google is trying to make up for that using various clever software techniques. That goes for the front camera too – its Portrait mode uses an algorithm that identifies the subject of the photo and blurs out the background. This simulates the depth of field, or bokeh effect, that good DSLRs are able to create, making some lovely shots possible.
It’s not really visible in pictures, but the back of the Pixels features a subtle texture that gives them better grip and will hopefully prevent unwanted incidents. That’s especially important, because if you hold the phones too tightly it will open Google Assistant, thanks to the integration of HTC’s squeeze detection feature. Squeezing definitely makes it easy to call up Google Assistant (it has become my preferred method actually), but it means you’ll have to deal with some unwanted interactions when holding the phone too tight or even just when picking it up.
