Star Trek: Nemesis – Rotten Tomatoes

Capt. Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) diverts the starship Enterprise from its scheduled trip to Cmdr. Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and Counselor Troi’s (Marina Sirtis) wedding to negotiate a peace treaty with the Romulans. Picard is shocked when Shinzon (Tom Hardy), the new Praetor of the Romulans, admits to being a clone of him. When the crew members discover a break-in on their computer, they are forced into a life-or-death battle to stop Shinzon’s Warbird before it can destroy the Earth.

If for anything else, Shinzon is an extremely active villain and Hardy doesn’t waste the extra screen time, though I was a bit turned off by a unique communication device he uses early on in the film, seriously it’s just uncomfortable (and not Star Trek at all) for the wrong reasons. With diminished screen time for the Enterprise crew, they barely leave the bridge, except for one out of place Mad Max style desert sequence. Nemesis is just one of those Star Trek films I can’t seem to figure out. I can tell the franchise fatigue seemed to set in, but there’s still plenty of good with the performances of the crew and the newcomer Tom Hardy.

Not bad. I don’t feel that Tom Hardy’s character does enough to hurt Picard for him to be considered his nemesis, though-kind of dumb considering this is the film’s title. You also don’t see Shinzon become any kind of complicated character-he doesn’t struggle with any of his decisions, or does anything good, just evil. This is the only thing that really annoys me about the film. It wouldn’t have been that difficult to make him a complicated character. This could’ve become a legendary rivalry between these two characters, but instead falls short of being great.

However, I don’t like the film’s villain; Shinzon comes off as a Khan-wannabe, even though a couple of scenes show he could have been something more. I don’t like Data being killed off or the hints of him possibly being “resurrected” (within B-4) just because it’s all part of the “

My principle criticism of this film is that they played it too safe for the most part. The biggest and most fundamental mistake made was the decision to repeat an established formula of success. An even bigger mistake was choosing

Dropped into the crowded popular entertainment galaxy on Dec. 13, 2002 and directed by British filmmaker Stuart Baird, “Star Trek: Nemesis” has Picard altering the USS Enterprise’s course following a scheduled rendezvous for Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and Counselor Troi’s (Marina Sirtis) wedding ceremony, to a tenuous peace treaty negotiation with the Romulans, who had rejected a plan to untie the forces of the planets Romulus and Remus.

Baird does a serviceable job keeping plot mechanics moving in this $60 million sequel, but there’s a glaring absence of depth that begins to feel tedious after the initial narrative revelations. It’s a handsome movie though, shot by “Top Gun” and “Mission Impossible 2” cinematographer Jeffrey L. Kimball, yet disappointingly infused with a forgettable orchestral score by the Academy Award-winning composer Jerry Goldsmith (“Planet of the Apes,” “

Picard is soon shocked to learn that Shinzon (Tom Hardy), the recently “appointed” Praetor of the Romulans after a deadly coup, is actually a cloned Reman derived from his DNA to replace the venerable leader with a Romulan agent in the heart of Starfleet. After Enterprise crew members stumble across a computer system hack, a perilous game is played to thwart Shinzon and his Romulan warbird from completing a plan to attack

characters get left behind a bit, and Lt. Commander Worf (Michael Dorn), Lt. Commander Geordi LaForge (LeVar Burton) and Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) all have very little to do. Riker and Troi get their wedding spotlight and a pending transfer to a new ship where Riker will be captain, and Troi is the focus of a muddled subplot that involves Shinzon entering her mind and essentially mentally raping her, one aspect of the movie that’s far too heavy and consequential for the couple of scenes Logan and director Stuart Baird devote to it. “It was a violation” is the most Troi gets to say about it. And then her connection to Shinzon is used like a Ouija board to track the location of his cloaked ship, with little regard for the attack’s emotional impact on her.

Like those villains, Shinzon is a noble but misguided relic from a marginalized society — in this case, the Remans, the slave caste of the Romulan Empire. Although he grew up alongside Reman slaves, was forced to work in dilithium mines, and led Reman troops in the Dominion War, Shinzon himself is not a Reman. He’s human, and as the film reveals in a delightfully sinister introduction, he’s also a clone of Enterprise Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), created by the Romulans as a tool to infiltrate Starfleet, only to be discarded into the dilithium mines when the Romulan leadership changed and those plans were abandoned.

raises the stakes with its humanity-threatening weapon. It features far more large-scale action, including various shootouts in starship corridors and an epic climactic space battle between the Enterprise and Shinzon’s ship, the Scimitar. There’s even an actual car chase, with Picard behind the wheel of a dune buggy being pursued by inhabitants of a primitive planet wielding old-fashioned machine guns. Later, Picard and Data are both eager to pilot a hijacked shuttle through the interior of Shinzon’s ship; even as they’re desperate to escape, they’re still having fun, like a pair of longstanding action-movie cops.

Should I Watch..? ‘Star Trek: Nemesis’ (2002) – HubPages

The last Trek movie I’ve gotten around to watching is, ironically, the film that very nearly killed the franchise for a second time. But is it as bad as they say? Benjamin Cox runs a diagnostic to discover the truth.

Sadly, the film displays little enthusiasm or joy in proceedings. Fans of the show or earlier movies will recoil in horror at the appearance of the ARGO, a post-apocalypse-style dune buggy that feels utterly out of sync with everything else ever seen in a Trek film. While some new ideas fall flatter than a meteorite, the film relies on too many contrivances and repetitive scenes we’ve seen too many times before. For example, the film once again allows Spiner to have the majority of the subplot given to both Data and his simpleton brother while other characters like La Forge and Worf have almost nothing to do at all. And while the film makes no bones about being the last one to feature the Next Gen team, it still tries to introduce a whole new species (the Remans) into continuity and basically, the only purpose they serve is to be Shinzon’s ugly minions.

. There feels something like contempt for the material bubbling underneath the surface while his ignorance of the preceding films and series underscores his unsuitability for the director’s job. The film also suffers from a lack of characterisation which I presume disappeared after some 50 minutes of cuts were made to the film. Ordinarily, I wouldn’t be too concerned about such things but the chemistry and storyline between Picard and Shinzon would have been interesting to explore a bit deeper. If Baird just wanted to produce an action-heavy outing for the Next Gen crew then he just about manages it. But personally, I never believed Trek was about action but about deeper themes and introspection and there just isn’t any. It just lacks that Trek magic that made films like

series and sees Picard lead his crew head to Romulus to discuss a possible peace treaty. They quickly find themselves in the midst of a political coup led by a surprising and unexpected culprit. The film stars Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Tom Hardy, LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Gates McFadden, Brent Spiner and Marina Sirtis, while the film was directed by series newcomer Stuart Baird. The film received a mixed reception from critics and remains regarded as one of the weaker Trek films seen so far. The film would only earn $67.3 million worldwide, making it a box office bomb and the last Trek movie released until 2009’s reboot by J.J. Abrams,

This print is a striking combination of retro movie-poster design and Ferguson’s own personal style. It gives the viewer a glimpse into the heart of the film, and brings to mind the wonderful memories we all have of watching the movie for the first time.
