-esque exuberance of the 1930s Prohibition, and then the dark, gang-ridden streets of 1968 New York, post-modernity. Leone seeks to capture each era of New York with poetic truth on camera and in spirit. The early days of De Niro’s Noodles are full of childlike wonder for the Big City that so many have used as a synecdoche for our country as a whole. The wide shot of Noodles’s gang walking in Lower Manhattan with the massive Manhattan Bridge looming in the background has become iconic, with the old bridge looking almost like a hulking giant of fairy tales. Later, when De Niro’s character is released from prison, the Prohibition era of New York is portrayed almost like a playground for men of power, with rich decor, gaudy costumes, and grandiosity spilling into every frame.

A stratosphere-scraping citadel of cinema, nearly everything about Leone’s last film—and greatest masterwork—speaks to the grand illusion of the American Dream. Narratively, it is steeped in the rich, aggressively violent history of the early days of our immigrant-hating nation, depicting quite brutally the underpinnings of male-oriented corruption that render many of today’s power structures. Contextually, the film as a cultural moment speaks to the agony and ecstasy of Americana, a great movie that was infamously botched upon release in one of the most shameful studio mishaps of our time, shortly preceding the heartbreaking death of Leone—which raised many to believe that the intensity and tragedy of America itself is what brought the Italian auteur to heart failure.

Originally a nearly six-hour epic, the 229-minute film spans an entire lifetime of Jewish immigrants-turned-mob bosses. Led by Robert De Niro and James Woods, Leone charts their rise from the Jewish ghettos of turn-of-the-century New York City to a life of lavish excess, corruption, misogyny, and betrayal as stilted grown men. Told in a kaleidoscope of unchronological fragments, the film presents the emotional passage of these two men, Noodles and Max, as they recklessly tear their way through an unmerciful society of systemic oppression and cruelty. It is smarter, superiorly affecting, more artfully shot, edited, and scored than any film of its ilk—a bonafide champion of the form, tragically overlooked in our culture.

님 저도 229분 버전 dvd로 여러번 봤었는데, 몇년 전 251분짜리 복원판 개봉했을때 15000원 주고 극장 가서 또 봤었습니다. 그리고 그 후에 한국영상자료원에서 상영하는 것도 가서 봤는데 볼때마다 좋은 영화에요..

님 왓챠에서 찾아보니 4시간 10분 짜리네요. ㅎㄷㄷ 주말에 볼수 있을지 모르겠지만… 한번 시도해보겠습니다. ^^;;

쵝오 극장에서 무삭제 재개봉할때 혼자서 봤어요 하도 길어 인터미션도 있더군요 근데 졸지도 않고 본 게 정말 신기했었죠

누들스는 극장에서 공연하고 있는 데보라를 찾아간다. 누들스는 데보라를 만나서 베일리 장관이 누구인지 묻지만 데보라는 정확한 답변을 하지 않는다. 그녀는 베일리 장관에 초대한 파티에 가지 말아 달라고만 한다. 그때 마침 베일리 장관의 아들 데이비드가 분장실에 들어오려고 노크를 한다. 그거에 데보라는 당황한다. 데보라는 끝까지 자신이 베일리 장관의 연인이라는 사실을 말하지 않는다.

Leone’s “Dollars” trilogy, ostensibly set in the States but shot in Spain, made the Old Hollywood Western formula look prehistoric. The films centered on morally dubious antiheroes and even worse villains, with the camera thrillingly zoomed in on the faces of some of the grittiest, sweatiest desperados seen on screen at that point. His intensely framed and edited visuals were matched by the incredible work of Ennio Morricone; I think it’s fair to say Leone’s films would be diminished by half without the collaboration of the composer.

“Once Upon a Time in America” made its world premiere at Cannes in 1984, where it received critical acclaim and a 20-minute ovation. A few weeks later, Sergio Leone’s magnum opus was unleashed on the American public — but the version they saw was very different from the one that brought the French audience to their feet. Leone originally envisioned releasing the film as two three-hour installments, but that idea was a little too ambitious for the producers. Instead, he chopped it down to a whopping
