That’s the high point of the game, when zombies move in like a tide. It’s satisfying to pull out a machete and hew my way through waves and waves. Taking them apart is satisfying and gory. I can cleave a zombie in half, take off individual limbs, or blow their middles away in one shotgun blast. At one point, I find myself laughing hysterically as I turn, see a zombie climb a turnstile, and cut him off at the ankles. His feet remain on the turnstile as the rest of him pirouettes off into the darkness, tumbling and rag-dolling down a flight of stairs and out of sight. It’s all a welcome level of cartoonish.

While it’s relaxing to enter a fugue of chopping my way through the zombie horde, and it’s spectacular to watch them tumble and fumble through set pieces, the rest of the game falls short of that fun. The characters barely banter, mostly barking out action calls or asking for healing. Each level struggles with pacing. There are few times of quiet, building tension. Instead, there are always zombies. The special infected spawn so often that they lose their impact. When I heard the audio cue that a tank was incoming in the Left 4 Dead games, I would break into a sweat. In

There are also special enemies. A bull is a riot gear-wearing cop who charges a survivor, grabs them, and slams them into the ground. A gasbag can be identified by their bright yellow hazmat suit, and upon death, explode and cover my screen with pus and blight. Screamers draw more zombies, creepers jump on survivors and inflict damage, and … yes, they’re basically the Left 4 Dead special infected, but reskinned. Overall, they’re dramatically weaker than special zombies in similar games, and that lets me focus on the real threat: 6,000 angry zombies.

11개의 모든 미션은 5시간 안에 끝낼 수 있기 때문에, 강화된 무기로 놀면서 난도를 올리는 것만으로는 재미가 오래가지 않는다. 또한 생존자 버스를 호위하는 등 같은 상황을 겪는 회수가 너무 많다. 그러나 이 게임은 다양한 배경에서 싸우는 전형적인 게임과 달리 독특한 분위기가 있다. 도쿄의 거리나 뉴욕의 지하철 입구는 세계관에서 보여지는 절망감을 상세하게 묘사하고 있으며, 좀비들이 서로를 짓밟으며 당신에게 다가오는 과정에서 이것이 더미가 되면서 당신이 있는 높은 곳까지 올라가려는, ‘월드 워 Z 영화’의 요소를 반영한 행동들은 시각적으로 놀라움을 안기며 이 게임이 다른 좀비 슈터 게임과 다르다는 것을 보여준다.

가끔씩 등장하는 강력한 특수 좀비들이 있으나 전체적인 다양성이 아쉬웠다. 예를 들어, 독을 내뿜는 가스백(Gasbag)은 원거리에서 전략적으로 죽여야 한다. 그룹에서 떨어진 팀원을 공격하는 럴커(Lurker)는 다른 팀원이 죽여야 한다. 정말 성가신 원거리 좀비 스크리머(Screecher)는 눈 깜짝할 사이에 목숨을 앗아가는 불(Bull)은 물론, 다른 좀비까지 소환한다. 다 나쁘지 않다. 다만, 하나같이 레프트 4 데드에서 이미 봤던 몹들의 짝퉁 같다. ‘월드 워 Z’만의 독창성이 약간만 더 가미되었더라면 훨씬 더 좋았을 것이다.

이 게임에서 주목할 만한 것은 직업과 진행 시스템이다. 6개의 직업 중 하나를 선택하면 총기 데미지, 근접 공격, 폭파, 치유와 같은 특정 요소를 전문으로 할 수 있으며, 클래스에 시간을 많이 투자할 수록 해당 클래스의 레벨과 함께 특정 능력이 향상된다. 클래스의 차별성이 뚜렷하다고 말할 수는 없지만, 클래스에 따라 제공되는 아이템들은 어려운 난관을 헤쳐나갈 때 중요하며 이런 부분을 강화하는 것이 매력적이다. 그러나 C4의 폭발 반경을 넓히는 강화 등이 게임 진행 속도보다 느리게 진행되며 매력이 점차 사라진다.

사실 원래 버전에서의 결말은 브래드 피트가 이스라엘에서 러시아로 가게 되고….여기서 여차저차 군인으로 징집된 후 좀비 잡는 부대에서 맹활약을 펼치게 된다는 내용입니다. 하지만 그 덕분에 헤어졌던 가족들과 생이별을 하게 되고….브래드 피트가 죽은 줄 알고 있던 그 와이프는 난민촌에서 몸을 팔아가며 (헉….) 두 딸과 함께 생계를 유지하게 되죠. 그렇게 영화는 마지막까지 이 가족들이 만나지 못 한 상태에서 애매하게 끝을 맺는다는 결말인데요….

​이 부분에 있어서도 역시 원래 결말이 더 좋다~ 아니다 바뀐게 더 좋다~ 하면서 설왕설래가 많은 부분일텐데요…일단 소문의 내용은 이렇습니다. 브래드 피트와 마크 포스터 사이에 불화설이 떠돌았고…1차 완성본의 내부 시사회 직후 영화를 본 관계자들 사이에서 어색한 침묵만이 맴돌았으며….이에 격하게 해결방법은 찾던 제작사에서 급기야 아예 후반부 내용을 바꿔서 싹 다 재촬여을 하게 되었다더라…라는 내용이죠.

The campaign’s scenarios are well-put-together and nicely varied. The New York campaign is the most familiar, tasking the survivors with escaping from the rooftops into the subway and through the sewers. By contrast, the Jerusalem story plays more like a military shooter, and you have to protect a scientist as he activates a secret weapon. The Moscow mission has minor religious undertones, and the final Tokyo scenario sees players protecting the last load of survivors on their way to an ocean liner. (As a side note, it was a little odd to see so many Caucasian zombies in the streets of Tokyo.) There’s a fair bit of tension as you wait for a generator to come online or try to fend off a swarm before opening the way forward.

Each class gains levels individually as you play, unlocking perks which can be accessed in the multiplayer modes as well as the campaign. These range from carrying more of your preferred throwable item to some really useful abilities such as being able to stand up if all four team members have been knocked down. Weapons also gain experience as they’re used, and you can choose to spend the in-game currency you earn to either unlock class perks or mod your preferred weapons with greater damage, shorter reload time, and so on. I particularly enjoyed the Crossbow weapon which fires explosive sticky bombs, and the Combat Shotgun, great for taking down special zombies.

Competitive multiplayer has some interesting modes, but suffers from what I think may be a fatal flaw. Perks earned in the single-player modes seem to carry over to PVP, giving higher-level players a huge advantage. Two days after release I tried playing a game and had no chance keeping up with players 30 and 50 levels higher than I was. It’s a shame, because adding hordes of deadites to King of the Hill and Domination games gives them an interesting hook. I’m hopeful a “no perks” toggle can be added here because there really is the germ of an interesting idea in these modes. Sadly, it’s not nearly as entertaining as taking command of

작년 4월 월드 워 Z가 출시했습니다. PC는 에픽 게임스 스토어 독점이었죠. 출시 후 개발사 CEO는 에픽 게임스 스토어에서 게임이 너무 잘 팔렸다며 최고라고 말했습니다. 게임기처럼 사야하는 것도 아닌데 런처 하나 더 깔아야한다고 불평하는 사람을 이해하기 어렵다고도 했죠. 그로부터 1년이 지났고, 일부 사람들은 이 게임이 다른 기간 독점 게임처럼 다른 곳에도 출시할 거라 생각했습니다. 회사는 기간 독점이라는 말을 하지 않았지만, 지금까지 많은 게임이 그랬으니까요. 그래서 누군가는 개발사인 세이버 인터랙티브의 페이스북에 스팀이나 GOG로 출시할 생각이 있냐고 질문했습니다. 회사는 현재는 계획이 없으며 추후 소식이 있으면 SNS에 올리겠다고 했습니다. 말했다시피 회사는 에픽 게임스 스토어 독점에 대만족했고..

그로부터 1년이 지났고, 일부 사람들은 이 게임이 다른 기간 독점 게임처럼 다른 곳에도 출시할 거라 생각했습니다.

말했다시피 회사는 에픽 게임스 스토어 독점에 대만족했고, 기간 독점이라고 말하지도 않았으니 특별한 결과는 아니죠.

거기다 얼마나 에픽과 사이가 좋은지 출시 1년도 안 되어 무료로 풀기까지 했습니다. 정말 돈독한 사이네요.

Maybe it’s because I had seen all the low ratings from my LB friends that I went into this viewing with expectations so low I was expecting to hate it. Maybe it was because it didn’t really wrap itself in a genre that’s near and dear to my heart, as Oblivion did. Maybe it’s because I’m not really an aficionado of action pictures, but, I had a really good time with World War Z.

이처럼 애프터매스가 월드 워 Z에 보탬을 해준 부분이 많았지만, 한가지 고개가 갸우뚱해지는 것은 바로 쥐였다. 크고 검고 꼬리가 달린 설치류들 말이다. 플래그 테일: 이노센스에서도 등장하고, 학창 시절 기숙사 복도에서도 볼 수 있는 쥐들은 애프터매스에서 임의로 나타나 플레이어들의 얼굴에 달라붙으려 한다. 게다가 무리를 짓고 다니는 개체들이라 일반적인 총으로도 해치우는데 애를 먹게 된다. 확실하게 쥐 떼를 제거하려면 폭발물이나 화염방사기뿐이었다. 하지만 이들은 항상 지니고 다닐 수 없는 특수무기이기 때문에 간혹가다가 쥐 떼 상황이 급작스레 발생하면 당혹스러울 수밖에 없다. 어느 정도 완벽한 절차와 과정을 지닌 방어전을 펼치고 있어도 구석에서 몰래 쥐 떼가 나타나 한눈팔고 있으면 쥐들은 내 동료들의 얼굴을 파먹고 있을 수도 있었다. 이렇게 되면 어이없이 의료 키트를 낭비해야 하고 아깝지만 수류탄이나 화염 방사기를 남발해야 한다. 게다가 쥐들을 얕보다가는 팀이 전멸할 수도 있으니 절대 무시할 수 있는 존재들도 아니다. 물론 난이도나 긴장감을 위해 추가된 요소라고는 해도 대부분 쥐를 대면하게 되면 차라리 없었으면 하는 마음이 더 많았다.

새로운 근접 전투는 전반적으로 개선된 느낌이었다. 이제는 낫 같은 무기를 쌍수로 들 수 있으며 무게감이 넘쳐나는 오함마도 장착이 가능해졌다. 이로 인해 근접전이 조금 더 다양해진 데다가 추가 능력(퍼크, Perk)으로 인해 나만의 플레이 스타일을 구성할 수도 있었다. 예를 들어 낫을 사용하면 다른 근접 무기보다 기본 데미지는 낮지만, 연속 처치를 하면 체력을 회복하는 퍼크가 있었다. 소방관의 도끼를 사용하면 다른 무기들보다 공격 속도가 현저히 느리지만, 대미지는 더 강하고 좀비가 불이 붙은 상태라면 추가 데미지를 가하기도 한다. 이러한 개선된 근접 전투 시스템으로 인해 전투 방식에도 다양한 종류가 생겨나서 긍정적인 모습이다. 전작에서는 근접전 개념이 자살행위나 다름없었다. 물론 지금도 본인이 숙련된 뱅가드가 아닌 이상, 혼자서 좀비 무리를 근접전으로만 상대하기엔 무리가 있다. 그래도 비상시에 한두 마리 정도 뒤에서 달려드는 좀비들은 충분히 버텨내고 도망갈 가능성은 생겨났다.

그러나 새로운 캠페인들이 고품질이라 할지라도 애프터매스의 전체적인 스토리텔링 분위기는 약간 미숙하게 느껴졌다. 기존의 스토리 마저 인상적인 부분이 없어서 그런지 기대감에 미치지 않았다. 단 한 명의 캐릭터도 기억나거나 인상 깊은 장면이 없는 데다가 대사들마저 밋밋하고 마치 그냥 엑스트라 배우들이 연기하는 배경 잡음이나 다름없었다. 대부분의 게임 오디오도 총기 발포 소리라서 대사가 묻혀도 너무 묻혔다. 게다가 어차피 듣게 되는 대사의 종류들 역시 오발로 인해 ‘쏘지 마세요’ 하는 형식의 대사들밖에 기억나지 않는다. 많은 협동 좀비 서바이벌 게임에서 번번이 일어나는 팀킬 데미지 현상으로 인해 자주 들리는 짜증 나는 목소리들이다. 물론 나는 다수의 좀비를 기관총으로 쓸어버리는 쾌감을 기대하며 월드 워 Z를 즐기려는 입장이었지만 레프트 4 데드 처럼 어느 정도 탄탄한 구성의 스토리가 있었다면 조금 더 좀비를 무찌르는 의미가 뚜렷하여 재미를 배가시켜줄 수 있는다고 믿는다.
