With our battery life test, where we play a looped 1080p video until the battery ran out, the MacBook Air (2020) managed just shy of 8 hours. We also found that when using the MacBook Air, using a mix of Apple’s own apps and other, more battery-hungry, applications, this year’s model lasted around 7 hours. That means it’ll certainly last an entire work/school day, and you could happily having it playing videos during long flights, but unless you really cut down on the type and number of apps you use, and lower that screen brightness, you’re not going to be hitting the promised 11 hours.
Still, swapping between the new keyboard of the MacBook Air, and the old keyboard in an aging MacBook Pro, the difference is stark: we much prefer typing on the MacBook Air. If the new keyboard design has also fixed the reliability issues of past MacBooks – and so far, it seems, has, with no reports of major issues since the MacBook Pro 16-inch launched with it late 2019. Combined with the improved typing experience, and we’d almost say the new keyboard of the MacBook Air is a complete success.

With all the discussions about the performance of the new quad-core CPUs, you should not forget that the MacBook Air is still primarily a device for casual users with simple workloads. This includes basic things like writing mails, video playback, or web browsing. The MacBook Air is great for this stuff, also thanks to the fast SSD storage. Because of the limited TDP configuration, the entry-level MacBook Air is even on par with the supposedly faster quad-core i5 when it comes to the single-core performance, which is still important for everyday tasks. There are also noticeable advantages in terms of the emissions, and especially the fan is much quieter with a slower maximum speed. This means the i3 MacBook Air is quieter for longer periods of time, even when you stress it.
Benchmark results are one thing, but the subjective performance impression is much more important, especially when you use a device like the MacBook Air, which was designed for casual users in the first place. Every user obviously has its own routine, but we did not notice any limitations when we used typical apps during our review period. This includes things like writing mails, chats via Skype or Discord, web browsing, playback of YouTube videos or video streaming (like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video or Disney+). The MacBook Air definitely benefits from the fast SSD and the powerful video decoder in these scenarios. The CPU performance is also completely sufficient for this kind of work.

For a while, the MacBook Air started at $1,099, meaning that Apple didn’t sell a sub-$1,000 laptop. There are, of course, new internals this year, with the MacBook Air moving to 10th-gen Intel chips across the range, but elsewhere everything is in stasis. Apple introduced its True Tone technology in 2019 to update the display and that remains in place here, but the rest of the package remains the same as the original reboot. This is a 13.3in ultraportable laptop with no touchscreen, and it’s all housed in an attractive aluminium clamshell chassis with that trademark MacBook Air wedge-shaped profile.
Unlike the MacBook Pro and iPad Pro, it isn’t a wide-gamut display, but it has been factory-calibrated to sRGB and performed exceptionally in all our usual tests. At max brightness with True Tone turned off, peak brightness reached 411cd/m2 and the contrast ratio was 1,053:1. The panel delivered sRGB coverage of 96.2% from a total volume of 102.7% and great colour accuracy, too, with an average Delta E colour difference number of 1.1 (the lower result the better, here).
The interesting part, at least for laptop geeks like me, is what’s changed. On this laptop, that’s the keyboard. Apple is calling it the “Magic Keyboard”, although a more appropriate name would be the “keyboard we put in after everyone complained about the last one”. Let’s not be revisionist about this, though; I actually quite liked the old butterfly-switch keyboard and used one for a couple of years on my main work MacBook Pro.

As I stated at the outset, I purposely opted for the entry-level $999 “working-man’s edition,” because I wanted to try the cheapest Mac computer that Apple currently sells to see how it performed. Although intense 4K video editing will mightily struggle on such a machine given its CPU and memory specs, I find that it’s a great everyday machine for doing the grunt work — writing, researching, composing, planning — you know, the stuff that lies beneath the surface of what makes many jobs click.
If you can afford it, you should consider upgrading the CPU to the Intel i5 quad-core model. What’s great is that you can customize the MacBook Air exactly to meet your needs, and there aren’t any gotchas involved. Even the maxed-out configuration isn’t at all unreasonable or outlandish from a pricing perspective, although in our current climate, it’s understandable if you’d be more drawn to the base $999 model.
Like the previous MacBook Air models, this machine comes with a standard row of hardware function keys, a hardware escape key, and a small Touch ID sensor. There is no Touch Bar to speak of, which is a wonderful thing for Touch Bar haters like myself. All of this combined with the implementation of scissor switches and inverted T arrow keys makes the MacBook Air keyboard the best keyboard in any of its laptops.

The laptop might be light like a gentle breeze, but it can get as loud as a hurricane. According to Apple, the speakers deliver “twice the bass and 25% more volume. The Air’s pair of top-mounted speakers filled my smallish living and dining rooms with crisp percussion on Jay-Z’s “Lucifer.” However, the guitar and piano were fighting for a cramped soundstage which only made the rapper and the background singer’s vocals sound distorted.
That changes with the MacBook Air 2020. Starting at an unheard of $999 ($899 for education users, tested at $1,299), Apple is extending consumers’ wallets a much-needed olive branch. But don’t assume because it’s cheaper, that Apple made any compromises. The laptop gets a host of new features including an Intel 10th Gen processor and the Magic Keyboard. This just might be the best MacBook Air yet.
However, if you need more power, you might want to consider the $1,599 Dell XPS 13, which while more expensive has Core i7 CPU. It also has a brighter, more vivid display. But if you want an ultraportable with great battery life, speedy SSDs and a super comfortable keyboard, the MacBook Air is a good choice. And if you’re looking to save a few dollars, consider the $999 Core i3 model.

Apple applications, of course, are where the MacBook Air benefits the most. If you stick to limited solutions like iMovie and GarageBand, you can handle some light content creation on the side. Just don’t go crazy on the Air’s upgrades. You can buy a Core i7 model, with room for up to 32GB of RAM, and that will raise the price sharply. Yet it will still lag the competition. The MacBook Air is not a device you’ll want to run Logic or Adobe Premiere on, so don’t try to make it a workstation.
What about the quad-core Core i5-1030NG7?Well, doubling the cores certainly doesn’t mean twice the performance. Because it’s still a 9-watt chip, there’s a ceiling on what it can do. Compared to the Core i3 model, the Core i5 model is 27% better in multi-core benchmarks thanks to those two extra cores, but it’s only 8% faster in single-core. That’s likely because these two processors share a low base clock speed of just 1.1GHz.
The cheapest $999 Air has the Core i3-1000NG4, a 9-watt chip with just two cores and four threads. On average, this dishes out a 15% performance boost in benchmarks over the Core i5 MacBook Air from two years ago. That’s not substantial and you likely won’t notice that increase in day-to-day performance. Still, it handles daily tasks well. Apps open quickly, and having a couple of dozen Chrome tabs open won’t slow it down.
