Of course, if the new Louvre wants to make an impact in global cultural circles, it must be able to defend its selection and the narrative it offers in an academic way. I think it will take several academic conferences and a lot of debate before its success can be measured on that score. But the galleries and the exhibits must also speak to people of many different countries, and recognise that it takes time and clarity to tell such a big story. Neil MacGregor’s A History of the World in 100 Objects, made for Radio 4 in 2010, was a remarkable hit that fired the nation’s imagination. But it lasted 25 hours and was broadcast over 10 months. The Louvre Abu Dhabi has a similar ambition. But it is displaying 620 artefacts and most of its visitors will spend only a few of hours.

And that is the tension at the heart of this museum. Its ambition is highly academic, yet it aims to speak to – dare I say entertain? – a broad audience of different cultures most of them unfamiliar with the vast majority of the epochs and cultures represented here. Of course, it’s a challenge all museums face. Massive growth in tourism has brought not only an increasing, but also a far more culturally diverse audience. The Louvre in Paris, for example, will soon see more visitors from China than from any other single nation. To enjoy their visit, they must be engaged, yet their cultural education and expectations are different from the museum’s traditional, Western audience. I don’t think it is a challenge even the world’s most established museums have fully addressed.

First, whether visitors from around the world feel inspired, baffled or bamboozled by the displays in the Louvre Abu Dhabi, they are less likely to suffer the sort of cultural exhaustion that you see in the eyes of most tour groups when they emerge from three or four hours in the British Museum, the Paris Louvre or the Met in New York. They will feel they can grasp the key works, and at least an idea of the story they represent, in one visit.  Second, they will surely enjoy the building itself. The simple experience of being here is hugely pleasurable. Galleries are stunning: Jean Nouvel gives you occasional windows on the sea, the sky and the courtyards outside; rooms to rest your eyes; space for the art and artefacts to breathe and your spirit to soar.

루브르 아부다비에서 유일하게 만난 한국 유물이다. 작품의 용도는 꽃을 꽂는 화병(Bottle with floral decoration)으로 소개 되어 있고 역사적, 지리적 출처를 Koryo dynasty(고려 왕조), Korea, A.D 1100-1300 으로 정확히 쓰여 있다.

인류 문명의 발상지라고 일컬어지는 지역들의 고대 문명 유물이 전시 되어 있는 The First Village와 The First Great Power 전시장이 시작이다. 아부다비에 있는 박물관답게 이집트와 메소포타미아 문명(중동지역) 유물의 비중이 높은 편이다.

박물관 오픈 시간은 오전 10시. 그런데 이미 그 전부터 사람들이 줄을 서서 기다린다. 개관한지 1년 남짓된 아부다비의 새로운 핫플레이스여서일까? 줄을 서서 차례를 기다리느라 꽤나 시간이 지체된다. 갑자기 잡힌 일정이어서 예약을 하지 못한 것이 못내 아쉽다.

Sunlight passes through all eight layers of the cladding. However, to achieve the dancing rain effect, each possible path of light was carefully calculated and redirected. The stars, which are composed of aluminium and steel, are purposely built in slim, medium, wide and mixed dimensions of thickness to guide the streams of light. The sun’s rays initially pass through two openings in the dome, before being blocked by a third layer. However the ray of light soon travels on as the position of the sun changes and the reflective elements of the cladding finishes redirect the light within the museum complex. Thus the ‘taches de lumiere’ or spots of sunlight appear, disappear, grow in size, or diminish, shimmering over the walls, floors and pools. Through years of hard work and exacting science we have created new lighting effects that have never been realised before.

When first establishing a suitable pattern for the geometric dome, a vital concern was creating an arrangement avoiding the appearance of a traditional space-frame. “Initial studies related to geodesic approaches (based on triangles) and orthogonal approaches (an approximately square grid),” explains Pottinger. “But all of the designs studied clashed with the architectural base pattern of four triangles surrounding a single square.” After a few different iterations, nothing felt quite right. So, one afternoon the designers started from scratch and decided to embrace this architectural pattern. “Instead of adding long straight lines we added further squares and triangles and the result is what you can see above the Museum today,” says Pottinger.

Considering the massive size and weight of the dome, the physical construction of it proved to be a difficult task. “Waagner Biro, based in Vienna, did an extraordinary job,” confirms Pottinger—workers formed the dome in 85 “super-size” components which were then lifted onto over 120 temporary towers, each one different due to the irregular spaces below. Once assembly was completed, the entire dome was lifted by synchronized hydraulic jacks over 600 millimeters vertically to sit on their permanent bearings.

Initially, the dome had 5 irregularly spaced supports. The structural demands created by this support arrangement were pushing us towards a form that would have clear lines of strength; but avoiding clear lines of strength was a key part of our brief because it would create the appearance of a space frame supporting a cladding system. A truly integrated piece of art was desired, so we suggested a reduction of supports to four, so long as we could position them at the corners of a perfect square.

루브르 아부다비에서 유일하게 만난 한국 유물이다. 작품의 용도는 꽃을 꽂는 화병(Bottle with floral decoration)으로 소개 되어 있고 역사적, 지리적 출처를 Koryo dynasty(고려 왕조), Korea, A.D 1100-1300 으로 정확히 쓰여 있다.

인류 문명의 발상지라고 일컬어지는 지역들의 고대 문명 유물이 전시 되어 있는 The First Village와 The First Great Power 전시장이 시작이다. 아부다비에 있는 박물관답게 이집트와 메소포타미아 문명(중동지역) 유물의 비중이 높은 편이다.

박물관 오픈 시간은 오전 10시. 그런데 이미 그 전부터 사람들이 줄을 서서 기다린다. 개관한지 1년 남짓된 아부다비의 새로운 핫플레이스여서일까? 줄을 서서 차례를 기다리느라 꽤나 시간이 지체된다. 갑자기 잡힌 일정이어서 예약을 하지 못한 것이 못내 아쉽다.

Following ten years of multinational collaboration between France and the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, Jean Nouvel’s Louvre Abu Dhabi opens this week to the public. Located on Saadiyat Island and surrounded by the sea, twenty three permanent galleries and exhibition spaces, a Children’s Museum, an auditorium, and a research center are connected by waterfront promenades which weave beneath the building’s iconic dome.

Earlier this week, the temporary sea wall that had been separating the Louvre Abu Dhabi from the seawater of the Persian Gulf was removed, creating a new harmony between site and structure as envisioned in the original project renderings. The building, which was conceived in 2007 and designed by Jean Nouvel, is set to open later this year.

captures the 8-year-long construction process from groundbreaking to completion, showing the museum as it came together from a variety of perspectives, including how the roof was assembled in mid-air before being gently lowered into place, and the enormous effort of earth moving to build the unique site.
