Let’s say you are teaching Language Arts (using Showbie, of course!) and want to gauge whether or not students understood what you taught in the previous class. You can create a quick quiz in Socrative, asking a few key questions to assess understanding, then share the Socrative Room Name (the name of the Socrative room in which you created the quiz) in your Language Arts Class Discussion. When your students log into Socrative and enter that Socrative Room Name, they will instantly be granted access to your quiz.
Once the quiz is complete, it’s easy to generate reports in Socrative so you can see which topics students understood, and which topics you need to spend more time reviewing. Again, Class Discussion can be used to drill deeper into topics where students scored lower, and to review individual questions from your Socrative quiz. There are three types of reports that can be generated in Socrative:
If you belong to a Showbie Group whose members might find one of your Socrative quizzes useful for their classes, you can log into Socrative generate a quiz URL and post it into the Showbie Group. There are two Socrative apps, one for teachers and one for students. These apps act in tandem to allow an instructor to quiz or survey students about the content they are covering in their classes. The Socrative Teacher app allows the instructor to create quizzes, space races, and exit tickets. When the instructor deploys these activities, students can then complete them on the Socrative Student app. An instructor creates a room for their class and then either shares the room name or link with students so that they can access the quizzes.
An instructor has the option to create quizzes ahead of time or they can launch quick questions. These can be either multiple choice, true/false, or short answer. The instructor can also embed images into the questions. An instructor also has the option to add in answer explanations, so students get information on the correct response. As students answer the quiz questions, the instructor can see their responses in real time. This allows the instructor to better understand how well the students are absorbing the class content.
Socrative is a great app for doing formative assessments as you are teaching or after class. The apps could be used in seated or online classes. An instructor can ask questions about the content that is being covered to make sure that students understand concepts correctly. This would allow the instructor to identify areas that they may need to revisit or identify gaps in student understanding. Instructors could also use the quizzes for opinion polls to spark conversation and dialogue about the content.

This free app can be downloaded in a student and teacher version for iOS and Android, and can also be used via the web. After signing up for an account, instructors can create short or long-form quizzes that students can access via the mobile app. While the initial purpose of Socrative is for formative assessment at the end of a lesson (it even has a “quick question” feature for on the fly assessment), it allows instructors to utilize a variety of question types, as well as embed related images, figures, and exhibits into questions, making it possible to use the tool for longer form assessments, as well. Once a quiz has been created within the mobile teacher app or the web-based app, it is stored within the interface for later use or re-use.
When the teacher is ready to launch the assessment, they are provided with a number of options that can facilitate classroom and assessment management, such as scrambling questions and distractors or utilizing a teacher-managed pace. This app has a lot of different options, including the ever-popular “Space Race,” an individual or team quiz during which students can see and track visually who is in the lead. Multiple choice, short answer, true/false question types give you more flexibility than Kahoot. You can also ask an on-the-fly question to get real-time feedback, use for an exit slip or “ticket in the door” (formative assessment quick wins!). Like Kahoot, there are reports which you can download to assess student progress. You can even download them to Google Drive with the click of a button.
Hi Karen! As far as I know, there is not an option for teacher-paced play with Quizziz, only student-paced in homework mode or in a live game. You can turn off the question jumble option so that students go through the questions at the same pace, and you can have the answers play for students when they’ve finished the game. 🙂
