영화 제목에서 알 수 있다시피, 이 영화는 19세 이상 영화이다. 따라서 아직 민증도 나오지 못한 사람들에게는 법적으로 이 영화를 볼 수 없다. 즉, 영화사에 있어 청소년 관람불가(이하 청불)로 영화를 만드는 것은 큰 위험성을 가지고 있다. 관객수가 줄어들기에 수익률에 큰 문제가 생길 수 있기 때문이다. 하지만 다른 비슷한 청불 영화인 ‘데드풀’에서도 알 수 있듯이, 청불 영화의 매력은 상상을 초월한다. 언제든지 캐릭터성을 살릴 수 있으며, 더 현실적으로 만들 수 있고, 강인한 심장과 마른 눈물샘을 가진 사람들에게는 다소 지루하고 유치한 장면들도 뺄 수 있기 때문이다. 게다가 ‘하드코어 헨리’는 총 런닝타임동안 1분에 2.5명씩 죽여야 하는데, 죽는 악역들이 맥없이 픽픽 쓰러지면 재미가 있겠는가? 차라리 유명한 게임인 ‘서든어택’이 더 현실적으로 쓰러질 것이다. 감독 또한 그것을 잘 알고 있기에, 이러한 위험성을 감수하고도 청소년 관람 불가로 영화를 만들었을 것이다.
필자에게 액션영화에서 스토리는 큰 의미가 없다. 액션 영화를 누가 스토리를 보고 가는가? 물론 스토리가 있으면 매우 멋진 영화가 될 것이다. 나쁜 놈으로 나왔지만 알고 보니 과거에는 착했었고 나쁘게 변한 데에는 슬픈 과거가 있는 악역과 이러한 악역을 죽일까 살릴까 고뇌하는 우리의 인간적인 면모를 가진 주인공, 악역은 꼭 총으로 쏴 죽이자는 철칙을 가진 여러 조연들과 꼭 총으로 쏴야겠어? 살려서 감방에 넣어버리자고 주장하는 다른 조연들의 의견충돌, 그리고 그것을 조율하는 또 다른 조연과 끝내 결심하고 행동하는 주인공, 그리고 주인공을 배신하는 세력과 배신한 세력을 배신하는 또 다른 세력이 나오는 액션영화는 확실히 스토리 면에서 좋은 평가를 받을 수 있다.
하지만, 그것은 더 이상 액션영화가 아니다. 그냥 총이 조연으로 등장하는 휴먼다큐멘터리일 뿐이다. 무릇 액션이라면 아드네랄린 주사를 한 방 맞은 듯한 배우들이 나와서, 비록 가짜지만 소리 하나만큼은 진짜 같은 총을 가지고 맞지도 않겠지만 진짜로 상대방을 죽일 듯이 쏘아야 하는 것이다! 총으로는 이제 부족하다! 모 영화에서는 거대 로봇도 나오기도 하며 자동차가 변신하여 서로 장렬한 펀치를 날리고, 어떤 영화에서는 살면서 탈 수 없는 최고급 자동차들이 나와서 경주를 벌인다! 이런 것이 액션의 정의다! 보는 사람의 심장이 짜릿해지고 나도 모르게 발가락을 오므리며 팝콘을 먹는 손가락을 멈추지 않는 것! 이런 장면들만 넣기에도 96분은 부족하다.

하드코어 펑크는 유스 컬처(Youth Culture)의 한 종류로 DIY, 80년대와 90년대, 언더그라운드의 성향을 모두 가지고 있는 서브컬처라는 인식이 있기에 노아(Noah), 슈프림(Supreme), 더 헌드레즈(The Hundreds) 등 굵직한 스트리트웨어 브랜드에서 하드코어 펑크와 관련된 제품들을 내놓으며 90년대 이전을 기억하는 의미로 자리 잡았다. 시간이 지나며 하드코어 신에도 여러 스트리트웨어(Streetwear)의 브랜드나 펑크 이외의 음악 장르와 매체를 받아들이며 다른 성격으로 변화했고 이것은 새로운 세대와 외부 팬의 유입과 펑크와 다른 매체의 경계를 무너뜨렸다. 릴 핍(Lil Peep), 솔자 보이(Soulja Boy), 재비어 울프(Xavier Wulf) 등이 출연한 로스앤젤레스의 네이처 월드 나잇 아웃(Nature World Night Out)은 이를 증명했다.
T : 콜드 월드는 내가 정말 좋아하는 하드코어 밴드로 2007년 컴필레이션 앨범인 [No Omega] 일본 버전 음반을 발매했을 때부터 친분을 쌓기 시작했다. 이후 2012년에 콜드 월드의 일본 투어를 보울 헤드에서 주선하면서 더욱 사이가 깊어졌다. 이후에는 드러머 닉 우지(Nick Woj)가 개인적인 일로 일본을 자주 방문하면서 그때마다 시간을 보냈고 가끔 나와 윈이 미국에 콜드 월드의 라이브를 보러 가기도 해서 지금은 사이가 정말 좋아졌다. 이번에 우리가 몇 가지 의류를 발매하게 된다는 이야기를 나누었고 허락도 받았기 때문에 쉽게 진행되었다. 제품이 상당히 멋지게 나왔고 멤버들도 굉장히 좋아했다.
그런 현상은 일본에도 생겨났으며 각 로컬 신에서 스트리트웨어나 다른 음악 스타일로 하드코어 신의 변화를 일으키는 양상이 전개됐다. 오사카의 스트리트웨어 브랜드 애프터베이스(Afterbase)는 하드코어 신에서 시작해 일본의 스트리트웨어 전반에 이름을 알린 브랜드로 성장했고 외국의 하드코어 밴드들이나 팬들이 꼭 방문하는 명소로 알려졌다. 분명 미국과 비슷하게 외부의 매체와 결합하여 성장하는 케이스지만 일본은 조금 더 다른 점이라고 한다면 하드코어 신 출신의 사람들이 직접 스트리트웨어 의류와 전자음악, 힙합에 관련된 결과물을 만들어가며 자신들만의 것을 창조하고 있다는 점이다.

To put it one way: It’s Alice in Wonderland if Alice dove head first in the rabbit hole. Then say she gets rather involved as wonderland build to a frothy boil only for the eggs of the salad sandwich to taste kind of upsetting. There’s really few things wrong with this film, everything including Jack Nitzsche’s score, the production design, the acting, on and on, it really outstanding. Of course the time this film was made (1979) is outstanding also, but it’s all part of the flair.

After a perplexing prologue that never gets explained, we’re woken up RoboCop style. Parts of our body are synthetic, and a gorgeous woman claiming to be our wife (Haley Bennett) is stitching us together. But then, an albino with telekinetic powers (Danila Kozlovsky) and his goons come in and destroy the lab. Turns out we’re in some sort of airship, and a cool dive in an escape pod takes us to a Russian city. That’s when our guide (Sharlto Copley in a collection of guises) appears to send us on a number of gruesome missions. Eventually this leads to a second fight against the albino, who is creating a race of super soldiers.
or folks who are too lazy to play their own video games, there’s the movie Hardcore. For 90 minutes, first-time feature director Ilya Naishuller throttles your central nervous system with a stretched-out spasm of first-person action. Run here, jump there, slice this carotid artery, shatter that skull. The plot, what little of it there is, has mute amnesia victim Henry (ostensibly “you”), avoiding death at every turn and frantically racing to a series of checkpoints delivered to his phone by a reappearing guide in the form of a manic (and homophobic) Sharlto Copley.
From an acrobatic point of view, all the GoPro choreography is impressive. “How’d they do THAT?” you’ll wonder for the first 15 minutes. But as the relentless shaky-cam and ear-splitting weapons blasts soldier on, this query changes to: “Do I have any aspirin in my bag?” Hardcore taps into a 14-year-old boy’s brain, marinating in a vat of Mountain Dew, fantasising about high-energy kills, lusty women and loud music. Perhaps interesting for sociological study, but as a movie, it is vulgar, boring and embarrassing.
