The S4 is a better phone than the Galaxy S3, featuring a better camera and screen, slightly better performance and a few novel software perks not included on its predecessor. But the S3 is still a very good phone, with its screen, camera and performance remaining vastly superior to many newer smartphones from rival manufacturers, even a year after release meaning that for S3 owners, there’s little reason to rush out and upgrade now to the S4. Additionally, with the S4 now out, the S3’s price has drastically plummeted. On a few third-party marketplaces like Amazon, we’ve seen a SIM-free version of the 16GB S3 selling for as little as £300, which is an absolute steal for any smartphone buyer not concerned about having the latest phone available.
Although technically a draw, with both phones winning 3.5 rounds, we don’t want to sit on the fence after putting the phones through their paces in so much detail. So we’re awarding the crown to the S4, as it won in the more important battles. The phone boasts a better camera, slightly faster performance and a clearer display than its Apple competitor. It was a close call, as despite being almost a year old the Apple iPhone still boasts superior build quality, more intuitive and bloatware-free software, and a slightly better battery life than the Galaxy S4. Because of this we’re not convinced the S4 will be able to pull off the same feat when facing its real challenger, the next Apple iPhone.

Samsung’s range of gesture controls are getting their most advanced incarnation yet on this phone. The Smart Scroll system is actually a lot more basic in practise than it sounds. With the system enabled (in the system menu), when you’re looking at a page of scrolling text, an eye symbol appears on the screen to show that you’re being watched. However the text doesn’t actually scroll strictly according to your eye movements but when you tilt the phone — tilt it away to scroll down, forwards to scroll up, and keep it face on to stand still. Same goes for the Smart Pause function, which is meant to pause the video you’re watching if you look away — in both cases, sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t.
But though it’s clearly a powerful phone, it doesn’t always feel quite as quick as it should. Apps can occasionally take a split second longer than is strictly necessary to open; some features take their time rendering. Wow. I had no idea something so bad could come of updating. I wasn’t able to update for so long due to no internet. But I finally did a couple days ago and it’s been nothing but a nightmare since! I really should have looked for reviews on this. But I figured google has never done me wrong.. Until this pile of crap. Every widget is unusable, it freeze a lot and it looks terrible. I have been looking all over the place trying to find fixes and such. Alls I find are problems from all sorts of users and very few solutions. I honestly can’t believe this update has been out this long! Considering the amount of negative reviews I think they should release an optional patch that downgrades… I can’t use this thing for anything anymore. It’s quite infuriating! I might just have to buy a windows phone or something. I hate this pile of crap that much. I have never hated anything from s2 – s4 until this…
Been running 5.0.1 on Verizon Galaxy S4 I545 for a while now with no problems. Completed my 2 year contract and was about to upgrade to a Note5 but holding off yet. With Lollipop update running well, cleaned out unnecessary apps and files, got a new battery, changed to a new solid feeling case (good deals on accessories for older models), downloaded a pure black wallpaper. S4 feels, looks, and runs like new. I think I’m still going to hold onto my S4 yet for a while longer.
I hate everything about the new update. Now it is constantly making me restart my phone because the “SIM card is being removed.” and also my touch key buttons at the bottom dont work anymore. So i have to use that stupid square to go back from screen to screen. It’s all annoying. I tried factory reset to see if that would work… nope. it’s all stupid and i hate it. why fix something if it aint broke? ugh.
