The A110 is not the largest car out there, so fitting a battery under the body required some unconventional thinking. The A110 E-ternite’s 12 battery modules are split up, with four at the front of the car and the remaining eight at the rear. A single electric motor at the rear provides 239 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, and it uses a two-speed dual-clutch transmission that was developed solely for this vehicle. Upgrades include Racing Matte Blue body paint inspired by Alpine’s 2022 F1 car, the same blue colour for the front ‘bonnet’ (rather than exposed carbon fibre), a black finish on the rear fascia and carbon-fibre decklid, black wing supports, and grey edging around the wheels.

In design terms, there’s no mistaking the A110 R for anything less than the most focused variant yet, which is good because it starts from a whopping £92,435. Available in the same matte blue paint finish as the firm’s Formula 1 car, the R gets a vented bonnet, a front splitter and new side skirts, all fashioned from carbon fibre and designed to improve downforce and aero efficiency. At the rear, the diffuser has been reprofiled and there’s a new rear wing featuring swan-neck mounts.
The A110 R’s key advantage over lesser models, though, is its chassis setup. The ride height has been dropped by 10mm (customers can lower the car by a further 10mm for circuit use), and spring rates are up by 10 per cent all-round. Alpine has also fitted a set of manually adjustable dampers, allowing owners to tweak compression and rebound stiffness to their taste.
Inside, the A110 R gets racy microfibre upholstery on the seats, dashboard, door panels and steering wheel, along with red fabric door pulls. The carbon fibre seats are fitted with six-point harnesses for extra support on track, and an onboard telemetry system allows the driver to monitor mechanical data and lap times during a session.

“The way the engine runs and revs is quite incredible. As a test, my passenger once or twice put his fist over the rev counter and asked me to guess the reading. Each time I was 1000 to 15000rpm low because there is there is so little commotion and extreme smoothness. At steady throttle openings, the engine hunts a bit, and it seems much happier with the pedal hard against the floor. This means one must either be changing down and braking or accelerating hard, and that is the only way to get the best out of the A110.

Nearly everything is right about this car; its design is pretty, rather than aggressive; and it politely declines to play the ridiculous game of power-and-acceleration figure one-upmanship, instead focussing on weight reduction, with a performance suited to everyday driving and handling sublimely suited to the roads its maker shares a name with. The only quibble among enthusiasts is its refusal of a manual gearbox, although this at least offers a silver lining.
“We measured the acceleration figures on a quiet stretch of a flat road. Getting the car away was easy. Two or three blips to make sure it was clear, and then up to 4500rpm, foot off the clutch and throttle down, and the little rocket blasts off with no wheelspin, straight to 7500rpm in a flash. Snatch second and there isn’t even time to wind the window up before the needle’s spun to 7500rpm. Third and top seem to pull almost as well.
