I bought these headphones, eventually returned them. Superb sound, but I was disappointed and surprised it did not have multipoint connection. My 4 year old Bose, and my Son’s $60 cheap headphone have multipoint. Seamlessly switching from my phone to my laptop without having to manually disconnect and connect is a convenience I’m not prepared to live with. I’m surprised all the praise being heaped on this headphone without mention of this glaring deficiency.

Sony has improved the quality and increased the quantity of microphones used for voice calls, so whoever you’re talking to should hear you more clearly. But if you’re more concerned with keeping the outside world at bay, Sony has also improved its already superb noise-cancelling. You can now set the function to be permanently on, even when not playing anything, meaning that you can use the noise-cancelling to quieten everything down for a peaceful nap.

find the pause button, I’d simply chalk it up to being a manual misprint. As it stands, however, I can find it maybe 35-40% of the time, and that’s after a couple of weeks using these. The worst thing is pausing them to take them off while making a purchase or talking with someone, putting them back on, and walking away mashing at the right side of my head like a blind fencer, trying to find the button again. It makes a small beep to confirm that it’s been hit, but it’s so quiet it’s easy to miss, and you may find yourself pausing/resuming music in a perpetual revolving door. At one point, I paused at a gas station, and by the time I found the button to resume playback again, I’d walked almost the entire two blocks home.

That said, I can’t help but think the WH-1000XM3’s are worth more than being the best traveler’s headphones you can get right now, though they might be. The huge range of customizable options and toggles for things like atmospheric pressure and voice commands up their overall technology, and to my ears, they sound good enough that you could buy them for listening to music alone—especially considering the ability to add your own 3.5mm cable for passive use. If you want super solid over-ears that you won’t have to leave behind when you go on a trip or are away from the charger all day, these are the ones to get.

Complementary to this function is the “Noise Canceling Optimizer,” which you can run whenever you like from the app. This function allegedly optimized the noise canceling to take barometric pressure and your own personal hearing/ears into account in some fashion. However, during my use and testing of the headphones I only ran it once (initially) while outside on a busy street in Philadelphia. I was very impressed with how silenced everything was, but the ANC does such a good job most of the time, I didn’t find myself using the feature again during my tenure with the product.

I’m an audiophile and my father is a Grammy award winning master engineer. Here’s what I’ll tell you, the V6’s which are the 7506’s sister, halted production in the early 90s due to a wire issue. The 7506’s were conceived by Hidako Iwasaki in 1974 and produced in Japan in early 1975 with a total production run of 31. Then in May of 1976 they were released in the US with a total production run of 76, hence the year. The were produced sparingly through the years and only given to prominent DJ’s and talk show hosts until the early 90’s..January 4 1991 to be exact when Sony decided, because off all the feedback, to go into full production and the US was shipped 1,500 units. Sears, Douglas, Highland were a few of the stores that carried them during this time frame. The response was amazing. Then in the summer of that same year, Sony produced over 25,000 units and the MDR 7506s outsold Koss in its first year. The V6’s are also Sony’s second best selling headphones up until 1999.

As before, the headphones make low-frequency sounds like jet engines and traffic swiftly melt away, but Sony has also improved its proprietary chip in this model to attenuate high-frequency sounds like voices. That doesn’t mean you won’t hear when someone shouts at you from the other side of the room, but it does make short work of background chatter in a busy coffee shop. On the flip side, the Focus on Voice feature is much better than its earlier incarnation. It aims to let you hear in on important announcements – when you’re waiting to be called to a boarding gate, say – while still allowing you to enjoy your music in relative quiet. The old Voice mode had patchy performance and often failed to filter out other ambient sounds, but the WH-1000MX3’s are much more discriminating in this regard.

My thoughts exactly. Bose QC’s are extremely comfortable. On flights I wear them even when not listening to anything. All that jarring engine noise is gone and there is no irritating pressure from the cans. On Sony NC headphones I’m constantly reminded about the cans due to the pressure around my ears. I also find it annoying that they only connect to one device at a time. With Bose you can have two devices connected which makes switching devices as smooth as it can be. However, Sony has made serious advancements in NC tech so I’m not surprised by their excellent audio quality. Also Bose seems to be overpriced. Materials are no better than on Sony’s and audio quality seems to be inferior. Bose needs to innovate and reconsider their pricing if they want to stay relevant in the future.

끝으로 노이즈 캔슬링 성능과 음질을 말씀드리자면 현장에서 잠시 들어본 게 다이지만 이번 모델에서는 새로운 HD 노이즈 캔슬링 프로세서인 QN1 탑재로 업계 최고의 NC를 실현했다고 하는데 실제로도 훨씬 좋아진 느낌입니다. 음악을 듣다 퀵 어텐션 기능으로 주변음을 들었을 때 구모델은 마이크로 말하는 걸 스피커로 듣는 듯한 다소 막힌 소리였다면 신모델은 헤드폰을 열고 듣는 현장음처럼 보다 깔끔하고 명료한 소리를 들려줬습니다. 노이즈 캔슬링 성능은 전작까지 저음 영역에서는 압도적인 소음 차단 능력을 보여줬는데 반해 중고음대역에서 아쉬움이 있었는데 이번 소니 WH-1000XM3에서는 그 부분까지 보완했다고 하는데요. 이 부분은 특히 일반적인 유저가 사용했을 때 사람 목소리에서 느낄 수 있는데 현장에서 듣기에도 구모델에 비해 좀 더 소음을 잡아주는 것 같더군요. 때문에 이 기능은 특히 사람이 많은 공공장소에서 보다 위력을 발휘할 것으로 보입니다. 청음기를 말씀드리면 전작인 소니 WH-1000XM2도 워낙 뛰어났기에 사실 스펙상의 차이도 크지 않아 잠시 듣기에는 큰 변별력이 없었습니다. 이번 모델에서는 착용감과 노이즈 캔슬링 성능에서 보다 업그레이드된 모델이라고 보면 될 듯하네요.

좌측이 소니 WH-1000XM2, 우측이 SONY WH-1000XM3입니다. 전작에서 블랙, 골드의 컬러가 신제품에서는 블랙&카퍼, 실버&골드의 투 톤 컬러로 변경되었습니다. 하지만 직접 보면 오히려 신제품이 원 톤 컬러로 보입니다. 제가 사용 중인 골드 컬러로 비교해봤는데요. 보시는 것처럼 거의 흡사한 색상이나 신모델이 좀 더 밝은 톤으로 변경되었고 가장 두드러진 외관의 차이는 터치 부위의 질감입니다. WH-1000XM2에서는 가죽 질감이 덧대어져 있는데 이게 밀어서 슬라이딩할 때 불편하다는 피드백이 있어 그냥 평평한 질감의 소프트 코팅으로 변경되었습니다. 직접 본 느낌으로는 보기엔 전작이 좋지만 걸림이 없으니 신제품이 보다 터치하기 좋긴 합니다. 그 외에 마이크 홀이 두 배 가까이 커지고 테두리까지 둘러보다 고급스러워졌네요. SONY나 모델명, NFC 로고 등 새겨진 글자가 흰색에서 금색으로 바뀌어 보다 눈에 띄게 되었고 SONY 로고는 음각에서 양각으로 바뀌었습니다.

신모델은 착용감과 착용했을 때의 미관도 훨씬 좋아졌습니다. 구모델 소니 WH-1000XM2의 경우 헤드밴드가 착용했을 때 완만하게 되다 보니 약간 우스꽝스러운 모양이 되었으나 신모델 SONY WH-1000XM3에서는 보다 두상에 가깝게 붙도록 디자인되어 미관상 보기 훨씬 좋아졌습니다. 하지만 헤드폰의 단점인 헤어스타일을 헤칠 가능성은 더 커져서 호불호가 있을 것으로 보입니다. 그리고, 귀에 닿은 이어 패드 부분의 드라이버 유닛 각도가 크게 변경되어 착용감이 훨씬 좋아졌습니다. 기존 제품이 11자 형이었다면 신제품은 귀가 기울어진 각도와 비슷한 ＼ /자 형태로 기울어져 귀를 누르는 압력이 약해져 훨씬 편해졌습니다. 구모델은 귀를 누르는 게 좀 강하다고 느껴졌는데 그런 피드백을 반영한 것으로 보입니다.

I purchased these headphones recently and while I absolutely love them, I have a hard time recommending them due to Sony’s abysmal Customer service. I have been provided inaccurate information and passed along for nearly 2 weeks now without an end in sight. With 4 phone calls, 6 emails, over 10 tweets, and 5 posts on their forums and all I keep hearing is how department A doesn’t deal with this, you need to contact department B. Department B doesn’t deal with that issue, you need to email department C… so on and so on. I would love to recommend these headphones, but seeing how there are some issues with it, I hope no one has to go through and experience their customer service as it’s early 2000’s Dell level of bad.

Sony ditched the rugged, leathery finish around the ear cups in favor of a new, plastic chassis — a change that detracts from the headphones’ swanky look. Holding them in hand felt nice, but they lacked the sturdiness you’d expect from Sony, let alone any pair of $350 headphones. Not to mention that the fabric readily attracts stains and scratches. The headphones are available in Black and Champagne Gold, and the latter seems to be more sensitive to markups, as I discovered a few marks around the ear cups and hinges after a day of use.

Adaptive Sound Control optimizes noise cancellation by analyzing your activity and neighboring sounds. You can run, walk, stand still or ride transportation, and the headphones will automatically adjust to your movement. It’s a cool feature, and with it, I got a better sense of my surroundings without taking off the headphones. The NC Optimizer also comes in handy, measuring atmospheric pressure and other factors that determine wearability (e.g. glasses and hats) to modify noise cancellation.

One of the big changes between this model and the previous one (which, as you can imagine, was called the WH-1000XM2) is the development of a new noise-canceling chip. Previously, the cancelation was integrated into the headphones’ internal amp, but with this new version, it’s an entirely separate chip. Having heard both models, and been able to compare them directly, there’s a real difference. The noise-canceling in the new XM3s feels much more adaptive, fluid, and responsive. It doesn’t just block out the low rumble of plane engines and traffic; it’s also very effective at eliminating voice, and other high-frequency noises. This is a genuine pleasure, especially if you have the headphones on without music, trying to catch some shut-eye. Crucially, you can use the app to fine tune exactly how much of the outside world gets in, allowing you to create a mix of music and the world around you to suit your tastes. While we do wish that Sony showed a little bit more pizzazz in their packaging and accessory game, the offerings here are perfectly acceptable. The box is simple, and the headphones inside are nestled in an ovular carry case, with the dedicated partition that makes folding them up and placing them simple. There are also cute, dedicated slots for the aux cable (used for listening to the headphones in wired mode), the aeroplane adapter, and the USB-C cable. We do love the fact that Sony have finally switched over to this, as it means that you’ll be able to charge these headphones from just about any other cable you have lying around, including many phone charges. But the cable they supply themselves is far too short.

At the time of our latest update to this review, it’s been around six months since the WH-1000XM3s came into our lives. We thought they were great then, and our opinion hasn’t changed: right now, these are the best overall headphones you can buy. The addition of Amazon Alexa has made them even more versatile, and their terrific sound, design, battery life and wireless functionality has made them our go-to headphones. We’ve used them on commutes, flights, while working, at the gym, everywhere. They’ve become part of our lives, and we will stunned if Sony can improve on them with the inevitable XM4s. There was one drawback on the form factor, and it’s something that seems to plague a lot of over-ear headphones. After about two hours of constant, continuous use, we found there to be some heat buildup inside the ear cups. It was surprising because the foam seems so airy and breathable, but because of the angle of the ear cups, and because the foam on the top of the headband is a bit firmer for support, it seems to prioritize a solid fit over air temperature regulation. With that said, we found a slight adjustment to the headband size led to some relief here. This is a minor concern, but if you’re hoping to get extended use out of a pair of headphones, we’d recommend trying these out in a store.

On paper, with 30 hours of promised listening time, you’d think this was just another check in the “perfect” column for the 1000XM3. If that hour mark actually held true for our uses, then we’d definitely call these the best headphones out there. But when we pushed these to their limits—listening to lots of bassy music, forcing the noise cancellation to deal with the loud street sounds of NYC, and hopping on a bunch of phone calls—we saw the battery get closer to 24 or 25 hours of use on a single charge. To be fair, that’s not bad. Some headphones at this price point can’t break 20. But, it’s a little disappointing to see such a high mark advertised, and such a substantial miss in the real world.

This is great for enclosed spaces like planes where noise might struggle to accurately cancel the plane sound without affecting your music too much. You can also customize your noise based on your head shape, hair type and even whether you’re wearing glasses. We only noticed minor differences in the canceling after reading our surroundings, but your mileage may vary, and these are flashy features to have. Add this to the ambient noise amplification options (in case you want to hear your surrounding better), with a slider to adjust the amount of ambient sound coming through, and you have a powerful set of headphones for daily use, even if you aren’t listening to any music at all.
