The right edge of the handset has a volume rocker and power button which houses a fingerprint scanner. Both are responsive and give the very softest of clicks when pressed. Xiaomi provides a 3.5mm headset jack on the bottom edge, alongside one of the two speaker outlets. The other is in a wide, narrow grille above the screen. Between them they generate reasonable quality sound: bass tones are not particularly strong, of course, but top volume doesn’t grate. I’ve heard a lot worse.
The top of the handset houses an IR blaster, which, for those who like to use their handset to control a TV or other IR-responsive equipment, is a real joy. Among the many pre-installed apps is Mi Remote, which can be populated with data from a whole range of third-party equipment. I’m not sure how useful Chinese satellite TVs will be in the UK, but the range of providers under each of the top-level headings is truly enormous.

For €229, the Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC does a lot to help it stand out from the competition. Its weighty feeling in the hand and garish branding won’t be for everyone, though users will enjoy the excellent battery life and great screen. The in-OS ads aren’t ideal but are reasonable given the price of the Poco X3 NFC. Overall, this is one of the best budget smartphones you can buy right now.

Silicone cases aren’t likely to improve the aesthetic of a phone, but the Poco X3 NFC is clearly made to be used with one (such a case is bundled). It has a camera housing almost as prominent as that on the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. In fact, it’s so pronounced that the case has a little lip that extends to meet the housing. This is in order to avoid scuffs to its sides, should you accidentally drop the X3 NFC.
The Poco X3 NFC doesn’t feel like an ultra-expensive phone in-hand, which is worth noting if you use your device without a case. It has a plastic rear, and while you may have read that its sides are metal, this refers to a thin band of aluminium that sits between the display and the main part of the plastic sides. This feels like a plastic phone because, for the most part, it is one.
The Poco X3 NFC is also a good bet if you want a phone that lasts a full day, even if you stream a bunch of video or spend far too long scrolling through Instagram. It has a large 5160mAh battery, and it lasts whether or not you use the screen’s high refresh rate. Granted, many phones in this class offer excellent battery life, but it’s still worth noting.

Xiaomi’s 20MP selfies are pretty good. Once you turn skin smoothing off, there’s enough detail to make for natural-looking photos. The Poco X3 picked up my skin tones just fine and the colors aren’t as over-the-top as they are with the main rear camera. There isn’t as much dynamic range as there is with the rear camera’s images, but there’s enough to make for some decent-looking photos. Xiaomi’s selfie processing handles noise well and doesn’t over-smoothen areas with lots of noise. Images come out looking rather clean regardless.
The Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC’s enormous 5,160mAh battery isn’t just numbers on a page. This battery consistently got me through two full days. Granted, my four-hour phone day isn’t the most pressing by any stretch, but other phones with smaller batteries have struggled to get me through a full-day. For those typically glued to their phone, expect the Poco X3 NFC to handle your frequent usage all the way to bedtime. The Poco X3 NFC outlasted the OnePlus Nord and Pixel 4a in our Rocky runtime test by well over 10%.
The Poco X3 NFC slots in just above the Pixel 4a for performance, just above the OnePlus Nord for camera quality, and tops the list for battery life, display responsiveness, and feature set. It also costs just over half the price of all three devices. This raises the question, is it worth dropping your budget that low? The tradeoffs might be worth it for someone who wants the most phone for their money. However, the aforementioned phones still beat out the Poco X3 NFC in certain categories.

POCO X3 runs Android 10-based MIUI 12 with the POCO Launcher 2.0 on top. This is one of the heavier custom skins out there that can take some time to get used to if you’re coming from a phone that offers a closer to stock Android OS. MIUI 12 comes with tons of pre-loaded apps and bloatware that can be a little too much on the eyes. These include games like Crazy Juicer, Dust Settle, and Block Puzzle Guardian, and shopping apps like Myntra and Amazon. Short-form video sharing apps like Chingari and Zili are there as well. Zili offers some questionable content, which we weren’t very pleased to see and it also tends to push out spammy notifications. You can disable these notifications through Settings.
POCO X3 sports a 6.67-inch FHD+ IPS LCD display with Gorilla Glass 5 protection on top and a centre-aligned punch-hole cutout. The display supports a high 120Hz refresh rate to offer a smooth scrolling experience. The display looks decent with punchy and vibrant colours and the size of the screen makes it great for watching content. The 1080p resolution is sharp and we were able to stream movies on platforms like Netflix in crisp high resolution. However, the display doesn’t offer the best black levels and viewing angles are average. We also found the brightness to be a little inadequate under harsh sunlight. Overall, the POCO X3 offers a good display, but it’s not the best in this segment.
The POCO X3 is powered by the newest Qualcomm Snapdragon 732G chipset, which is a step above the Snapdragon 730G that powered the POCO X2. The newer processor clocks at up to 2.3GHz and is expected to deliver a minor performance upgrade over its predecessor. The Adreno 618 GPU has also been enhanced to offer a 15 per cent faster graphics performance. The POCO X3 scored 282,092 in AnTuTu, which is only marginally better than the POCO X2’s score of 279,444. In Geekbench, the POCO X3 scored 569 in single-core and 1778 in multi-core, which are again minor improvements over the predecessor. This suggests you shouldn’t expect the Snapdragon 732G SoC offers a world of difference in performance.

After releasing MIUI 13 in China back in December, Xiaomi finally brought the latest iteration of its skin over to the global market weeks ago and confirmed its rollout schedule. Of course, that schedule failed to include Poco devices, but that has now been remedied.
At the Indian Poco M4 Pro 5G launch yesterday, Poco finally announced its plans for the rollout of MIUI 13. In the company’s own words, “We are just a few weeks away from the Poco M4 Pro, 5G, the Poco X3 Pro, and the Poco F3 GT getting a taste of MIUI for POCO.”

I ran the phone in the adaptive 120 Hz screen refresh rate mode during the review period. It’s not a constant 120 Hz, and varies by usage and apps, but I prefer its fluidity over the regular 60 Hz refresh rate. With casual use and about an hour of gaming, I easily managed two whole days of use. With constant gaming for two to three hours, it came down to a full day of use with about 10-20 percent left. And given the size of this battery, that’s still good enough for several calls, messages and photos, before the battery dies out.
There is, however, a slight ghosting issue. This happens when the pixels on the display can’t keep up (or refresh fast enough) with the refresh rate of the display. But you will mostly notice this only when scrolling through spaced out text over a white background like in Chrome, the Settings app or the Contacts app. Some may find this effect a bit irritating, but most others may not even notice it. I noticed it because I’m used to ultra-premium (upwards of Rs 1 lakh) devices with 120Hz OLED panels.
As for the user interface, I did notice a few random stutters from time to time, but it did not ruin the 120hz experience for me. You need to keep in mind that this is MIUI 12, which is a major milestone update for Xiaomi. It has only recently been released for most Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco smartphones, so I’m guessing that future updates will solve these minor hiccups. And from what I know, there are some software updates on the way.

While Xiaomi did a great job with bumping hardware specs on the X3 Pro the camera department got the short end of the stick. The Poco X3 Pro has a quad camera on its back with a 48MP primary, an 8MP ultrawide, a 2MP macro, and a 2MP depth sensor. While on paper this setup is not bad. However, the regular X3 model in 2020 had a 64MP main and a 13MP ultra-wide camera along with the two 2MP sensors. So at least on paper, this is a downgrade as far as the main cameras on the back go. Thankfully, there is no change to the front 20MP selfie camera.
The black color box cover gives way to a yellow box with a yellow Poco insert which is classic Poco branding. Inside the insert, we have a TPU case, SIM tool, and some paperwork. Underneath is the Phantom Black Poco X3 Pro review unit. Underneath the card insert is a USB-C cable and a 33w fast charging power brick. The phone comes with a factory-applied film screen protector. Still nice to see everything included in the box to get started versus having to buy additional accessories on top of the smartphone.
The main camera takes decent pictures in daylight with reasonable detail and good dynamic range. Color accuracy is also quite respectable with low noise. But low noise does impact detail a bit. Perhaps a software update in the future might make things better. I did not use the 48MP option since the file size starts to get very large and eats up storage space quickly. Also, there isn’t a huge discernable difference between the 48MP versus the 12MP output.

Like the standard Poco X3, the Poco X3 Pro amazes with its battery life. Despite the more powerful processor and smaller battery, it shines when it comes to efficiency thanks to Xiaomi’s traditionally strong optimization. The 5,160mAh cell lasts a full day and more with ease. I regularly clocked over six hours of screen-on time from the phone with near-constant music streaming, a number of phone calls, text messages, and emails. With frugal use, you can easily expect two days of use from the phone.
The Poco X3 Pro is competing in a crowded category with many high-quality options. While most alternatives will miss out on the sheer power of the Poco X3 Pro, they offer well-rounded packages that might be worth looking at. Aimed at a specific niche that is focused entirely on performance, the Poco X3 Pro is an appealing option. But if you’re not an avid smartphone gamer, there’s better value to be had in phones that take a more multi-faceted approach.
Over on the front-facing camera, the 20MP sensor is capable enough, but the processing is a major letdown. Contrast levels are boosted to unnatural levels, and there is very significant sharpening and skin retouching. Elsewhere, the macro camera is functional but its 2MP resolution won’t let you do much with the images. Video recording tops off at 4K, 30fps. The quality is decent enough though the telltale signs of oversharpening persist.
